Yeah, and in that last picture I had to use a leaf as a background because those tufts of axillary hairs don't show up with a white background too well.

Yes, those axillary hairs can be quite difficult. Sometimes, they just need a good talking to. "If y'all don't behave, I will have to dehisce your peduncles and truncate your apical meristems........". That usually gets them to cooperate better
.
Of course, sometimes those axillary tuft's behavior is dependent on whether they are on shady beeches or sunny beeches

Bud and petioles.
I had the distinct pleasure of playing "petiole" for an 87 point bingo in computer Scrabble today - - - while I was at work.
I won the game too. 387 to 345

I also had the distinct
*displeasure*
of playing the word "adelgid" for an apparent bingo in another game of Scrabble - - only to discover that (inexplicably
) it is not in the Scrabble dictionary.
I am still angry about that.....and even more so when I look up the word on
http://dictionary.com
and there it is for all to see.

As for your "beaked critters", I have seen them by the hundreds on my steps down to the lake. I have several mature beeches down close to the edge of the lake.
