Yeah, and in that last picture I had to use a leaf as a background because those tufts of axillary hairs don't show up with a white background too well. Ya dats a good one!

Yes, those axillary hairs can be quite difficult.  Sometimes, they just need a good talking to.  "If y'all don't behave, I will have to dehisce your peduncles and truncate your apical meristems........".   That usually gets them to cooperate better Smiley.

Of course, sometimes those axillary tuft's behavior is dependent on whether they are on shady beeches or sunny beeches Grin.

Bud and petioles. Grin

I had the distinct pleasure of playing "petiole" for an 87 point bingo in computer Scrabble today - - - while I was at work.  Roll Eyes

I won the game too.  387 to 345   Smiley

I also had the distinct *displeasure* of playing the word "adelgid" for an apparent bingo in another game of Scrabble - - only to discover that (inexplicably  Angry read) it is not in the Scrabble dictionary.

I am still angry about that.....and even more so when I look up the word on http://dictionary.com and there it is for all to see.

As for your "beaked critters", I have seen them by the hundreds on my steps down to the lake.  I have several mature beeches down close to the edge of the lake.
