Hi, I'm Paul_H's favourite sister, but please don't hold that against ~~him~~ me.

I belong to a bird forum, and one of the members was asking about this tree. I've seen some of the ID work you folks do here, so I'm hoping someone knows what it is... and more importantly... is it safe for birds. Not wild birds, but birds from the parrot family, such as conures, eclectus, amazons, etc.

Her post:

We have a bush/tree in our backyard that goes crazy and we keep hacking it back only for it to come back with a vengeance. I think, but am not sure, that it's a mimosa but there have never been any blooms to confirm this. The leaves are reactive and close at night or when it rains. Its only saving grace will be if it is mimosa, which means I could give it to the birds to play with. Otherwise it's getting ripped out and the rest burned out because we're tired of hacking it down every couple months.

It grows like a bush, rather than having a central trunk like a tree. It's currently about 6' tall.

hmmm.... I see the pic didn't work. Rather than spend time figuring out how to upload into the gallery here, which I'm sure is easy because I know Paul has done it, I'll link to the original post with pictures. There's a bigger pic at the top of page 2.

Yup, I'll agree with mimosa, Albizia julibrissin. It's bushy because you keep hacking it down (and not a strong central trunk kinda tree to begin with.)

I am in agreement with Riles. Notice the bi-pinnate compound leaf. Definitely a legume.

Someone else didn't seem to think so, because, "Mimosa's (aka silktrees) do not have the jagged edge appearance that this leaf does. Mimosa leaves are also rounded at the tip."

Perhaps a different variety?

It DOES look like the silk trees I've seen, but I didn't know till just now that they were mimosas, which I thought was a drink.

I'd have to agree, your avatar is much better than Paul's

Our Mimosa's in the Blue Ridge in VA are in bloom right now, I'd bet they are or are mighty close in WV. I'd have your friend keep an eye out for one in bloom, take a branch and compare with their mystery tree

Well yeah.... but maybe those West Virginians don't know any better.

She thought it was a mimosa right from the start, so with yours and the others confirmation, that's probably exactly what it is.

It sure looks pretty... and I almost planted one in my yard a few years ago. The flowers are supposed to smell heavenly.

I thought I knew most of my pea trees till we went to southern Texas at Christmas. I don't know nuthin now

. But in my neighborhood the only thing that looks like that is a mimosa.

Did Paul ever tell you about the time he was going to burn the muskrats out of their hole? This was back in the time of the wide leg Wranglers.

Or how about when he went out back to collect the eggs and ended up throwing them all at the cows who ~~followed~~ "chased" him home? (note I said cows, not bulls)

I am a bit late on the plant ID you guys have it covered,

just thought i'd let you know we call them Silk Trees as well, but our Mimossa is an invasive native pest that has large spikes. Wendy we have a lot of different varieties of Australian parrots that breed on our property and we have nine Silk Trees around the house, I put the odd branch with flowers in with our captive Kakarikis and King parrots.

One of the people on the Bird Forum is from Down Under as well, and he's posted some pics of wild parrots in his yard. What might seem everyday to you is pretty amazing to those of us who live in an area where a bird with a bit of red on its wing is considered colourful.

I had heard of silk trees... like I said, I considered planting one but really didn't have anywhere to put it. I didn't realize they were mimosas.
