Goodbye to our friend - Nailhead.
« on: May 03, 2008, 07:01:08 pm »
I've just got off the phone with Karen (Mrs Nailhead),

Pat, great friend and buddy of all on the FF, aka: Nailhead passed away this morning, from a massive heart attack. Aged 54.

Understandably Karen is distraught, and I wish there was something I could do for her, even just give her a hug.

Goodbye Pat. I'm SO sorry we never got to meet. I know we were planning your trip here and looking forward to it.  :-*

Well first, that plain and simply sucks.

I truly enjoyed the time spent with him on the ATV ride. And had planned to stop and see him when ever I was in that area.
We wish his family the best in recovering and coping from this loss.

I was shocked and deeply saddened when Tom called to tell me this terrible news, this afternoon.  It brought back the memory of that first few moments of the first Piggy Roast I attended.  Ol' Tom was anchoring a rocking chair on the front porch of Jeff and Tammy's little cabin.  The piggy was doing his thing in the roaster, and there before my eyes stood Nailhead, Chet, Pasbuild, Furby, and Marcel.  What a magical moment that was!  I have relived that little experience a thousand times in my mind, but now the memory has a hole in it.  Like a piece of "character wood" with a strategically place knothole, that memory has become even more special today.  I will miss Pat, even though I only met him twice, but I don't think I've seen the last of him.  Some day, either tomorrow or forty years from now, or somewhere in between, I'll cross that river too.  I figger Pat will be there with a Bleue for me and a big grin on his face, and all will be right again.

Pat, I miss you.  Ive been sitting here in the cabin most of the night thinking. Thinking for the first time that I wish I wasn't here.  Wishing I was somewhere where I could do something, but knowing there is nothing that will help. There is nothing I can say to convey my sense of loss. The day before I left for here I got a package from Pat. The last IM I had before leaving was from Pat. As I sit here the half pint of Maple syrup on the table, Pat's U.P. gold,, looks like a 55 drum. Its the biggest and most important thing in the cabin to me.  I'm Glad to have seen Pat just last month and it hurts unbareably to know  I wont be seeing him again soon.  I wish like  Asy I was just able somehow to be there and give Karen a hug.  Pat, I miss you

Ya know Jeff, somehow the world just seems a smaller place tonight. I never got to meet Pat, but I'm real good friends with Karen. I just finished my jar of Pat's Maple Syrop last week. I just wish I'd kept that tablespoon in the jar so it'd always be there.

I'm still in tears. I just can't breathe for Karen's loss. I know how much she adored him and it kills me to think some day I may have to walk in her shoes, but for today I watch her from afar and knowing there's not a DanG thing I can do to comfort her is breaking my heart.

I know Andrew had to ask me four or five times whether I was kidding. We were planning their trip here, as I said before, and Andrew's catch cry when he couldn't work out how to do something on the farm was "Don't worry, Pat'll show me how to do that when he gets here"...

I'd really like to ask any forum member who is able to go to the funeral or visit with Karen to please PLEASE give her a hug and tell her it's from me.

asy.  (sorry, no smiley face today)

Addition:
Just got this in an email from Karen, in that email she also asked me to thank everyone for their kind thoughts:
We are having visitation at Reids Funeral Home. L'Anse, MI Mon. from 6-8 pm. The funeral will be at the Zion Lutheran Church, Skanee at 11 am Tues. with visitation at 10 am. A luncheon is to follow. - Just in case anyone wants to go...

Sorry for the loss of a great forum member. I still remember the maple syrup he sent way out here in my corner of the continent.

Just yesterday I heard of the passing of a local woodlot owner and dairy farmer who died as he was climbing into his pickup with his wife.  :(

I had thinned 40 acres of his woods 2 years ago.

Pre-commercial thinning pays off. :)

I woke up this morning hoping it was all just a dream. Unfortunately it is not a dream. I too just received a half pint of Yooper Gold. Jill made her famous buttermilk pancakes yesterday morning and we cracked the seal on the gold. It was the best tasting syrup ever. Dark and thick...........

I will miss Pat greatly. In a short time I grew to love the man. We had many parallel interests and experiences.

The ride we had last fall was one of the best times I've ever had. He was a gracious host and the rest of The Forestry Forum members that were there made the experience just that much better.

The Forum will never be the same for me..........

I am a better person for having known and spent time with Pat.

God Bless him and his family and all who are greving this morning.

I did not have the pleasure to know Nailhead, so I have just finished looking through many of his posts. He was obviously a credit to sawyers and the human race. In fact, as strange as it may seem I feel llike I got to know him even just a little because I know exactly where I was and what i was doing the day he joined the forum, and I hope it will not offend anyone if I share it.

He made his first post on June 10th, 2005 just before 1:30 p.m. That was my birthday, but more importantly it was the 1 year anniversary of my marriage to my HS sweetheart. I remember exactly where we were and exactly what we were doing. We were at the Speedzone in Dallas, racing those Miniature Indy cars and dragsters and having a great time, at the very same instant Nailhead entered into new friendships here on the forum.

His first post was not to introduce himself, or to ask a question, or to crack a joke, but to share his knowledge to try and help someone out. sawyerkirk to be exact, and Dang chimed in right afterward to welcome him.

Good info, Nailhead!  Welcome to the ForestryForum.  Hope you'll stick around and participate. :) :)

I can tell everyone is glad that he "stuck around", and I wish I had gotten to know him. I am sorry for your tragic loss Karen, and it's my prayer you'll soon find peace that surpasses all understanding, even during this sad time.

No No No....don't know what to say...
Just returned to the Forum, and not the news I wanted to hear (about any Forum member).

So many have expressed the same sympathy I feel for Pat's family.
Pat was a very giving man, and many are going to miss him greatly. I will.

I too, will prize that pint of maple syrup just received (and even the box Nailhead sent it in). So generous to have been remembered that way.

Pat, may your journey be great beyond this earthly world.

Will miss you, no question.

Rest in Peace (but while at it, think about that sawmill laying in the woods that you were going to resurrect, just for fun  :) )

My condolences as well.  We are reminded that none of us are guaranteed a tomorrow, and that all we can do is live our lives well. I didn't know Nailhead, but those of you who did show that he did live life well.

I just looked again at the last thread of Pat's about the old mill.
Someone, not realizing the situation, had wished Pat "good luck."
Pat is in good hands and now has no need of luck.

One day we may be talking about making a deal, and then we
are suddenly at rest and talking with Our Lord, instead.

May He bless and comfort you all now, Karen, the family, and friends.

Karen and Family,
Our heart goes out to you at your sudden loss. We wish
you strength now and in the days ahead. We will keep you in
our prayers and thoughts.
At times like this, we can't help remembering how fragile
life is.  My husband & brother had the pleasure of meeting him
on the Forestry Forum's ATV trip to the UP last fall.  They have
a high regard for Pat, he was a great host, I'm told he was a
generous soul, and a great guide to the ones who were not
from the area.
With love and care,
Ken & Lorraine

Just found this item on the forum and am deeply saddened.  I visited Pat & Karen last fall and they invited me into their home and made me feel like we had been friends for a long time.  He will be sorely missed by all.  My heartfelt condolences to Karen and their family.

Jeff is up at our property and talked me through the posting process of this video by cellphone. This was taken during Jeff's visit with Pat at his sugarbush in April. Pat really loved to make maple syrup and the week before he passed away had sent jars out to several Forestry Forum friends. Jeff is stranded at the cabin right now but really wanted to share this with you guys.

Thanks for sharing the video. Brings tears to hear Pat talking his wisdom and to hear his chuckle.
Will miss him, and knew him for just a brief moment in time.
Burlkraft went up to the visitation this evening. Glad he was able to go.

Pasbuild, our prayers are with you too. I had heard Pat say he was a very close and dear friend to you, as you were to him.

Condolences from east central Saskatchewan. Pat, was a very wise man, and as mentioned earlier would offer advice in a heartbeat. Very unfortunate to hear of his passing.  He will be missed greatly.

I was thinking...  We as a forum should restore that old mill up in memory of Nailhead...  What do you think everyone?

Wow, I just heard about this-what a shock.

Pat was an exceptional host at the ATV ride and he will be greatly missed. I remember that he was going to sneak into the Huron Mt club and take pictures of some rock formations that were set there by the vikings. He wanted to do this in rememberance of a freind of his that recently passed away. That would of been quite a trip and I was looking forward to seeing the pictures.

« Reply #66 on: May 07, 2008, 10:30:48 pm »
They say that the measure of a man is how he is thought of after he is gone.  Family and friends gathered Monday and yesterday to say good-by to the man you knew as nailhead.  The number of people that paid there respects spoke volumes for the man that Pat was and the life he lived.
On behalf of the family I would like to thank everybody for their prayers and well wishes, Karen is a strong women and with time and her many friends her pain will some day become bearable, please continue to pray for her and her family.

I am very blessed to have been able to call him my friend for the last twenty years.
