We don’t like to let too much lumber stay around long enough to collect dust.  We like to saw it out and send it to market.  Even so,  we have, I’d say, 10,000 bf of it sticked or stored in the barn.  Every once in a while, now and then, someone comes and buys some.

Here is a load going to an animal homeless shelter.  It was built into a bench for a couple of tigers and a mountain lion.

I'm not kidding!

We do use our own lumber to build things.  Here is an extention on our sawshed we put up a few years back.  Posts are 6x6 cedar, framing lumber is sycamore and siding is oak.

Right now and probably for the next few years, most of the wood I cut goes into buildings and furniture for the farm and family.  Trying to get set up for retirement (social security seems to be disappearing so work seems the only workable source of income then).  So far making good progress on getting the right combination of equipment and buildings- should be set up by end of this year for both timber framing and finer woodworking (although I've got a whole lot more learning to do for both).  The more I work with wood, the more it comes home how this is a truly hands-on craft: you just have to do it lots to get reasonably good at it.  At first, I was trying to do each joint or each piece of furniture perfect- didn't work well cause I wasn't up to a high level of quality.  Now I do more "let's build something and try out methods and ideas" and this seems to be working a lot better: I get stuff made I need and I learn a lot more from each project.  Is the quality as high?  Of course not, but overall, each joint and every part of each project benefits from the range of experiences.

Sorry, didn't mean to ramble, so back to topic: I am cutting mostly red oak right now and using that up as fast as I cut it.  That's misleading, I guess, since I only cut what I need for a project.  The beauty of having your own sawmill is that the whole process is accelerated- the kids can't believe how fast and attractive the benches are I've been making the last week or so and the ideas for Christmas presents are beginning to pop up now, so the quality must be almost "good enough."

Unlike most of you, I haven't bought a single log so far but am looking forward to it- I'd love to try cypress and see how that works.

If I can quit building/expanding my sawshed long enough  :D,  I will be using much of what I have to finish the house additions I have dried in.  I  saw a few logs for other folks and sell a bit from my own stacks, from time to time.  I have several building projects to be done on the property, as, in the not too distant future, I will probably be moving all my business out there and shut down the city address (expenses).

In the past couple of years I have built most of the furniture in my house, the kitchen cabinets, flooring for the house, two storage sheds in the yard, soffit and fascia around the outside of the house, the kids' "cedar shack" in the backyard, countless small projects for gifts...

One of these days I will buy a mill and really get busy. ;D

I am building a barn with my lumber. 28 x 48 pole barn with a gambrel and loft upstairs. On the side is a 14 x 32 workshop. I'll use the workshop for woodworking so I can make more stuff with my lumber.

Onewithwood: you sound like me- not surprising I guess since we're both on the forum.  Yeah, I keep building things too, mainly buildings that will help me build the one I really want to finish- my timber frame workshop.  meanwhile, I'm finishing up the "big barn" with a combination of store-bought and self-sawed (is that a word?) wood, moving more toward stuff I saw myself as I gain confidence both in my sawing and in the wood I make to work right... if that makes any sense.

MrMoo: how about some pictures?  That sounds like a nice set-up and I'd love to see how you're configuring your buildings for use.

My current project is a fish tank stand. No where near finsihed yet, but it will hold 2 x 80gal, 6 ft long tanks I was given.

Design sketches.

With virtual fish tanks installed.

Starting out, some precision crosscutting.

Planing off the 16x2s using a router on the mill. Too big for the benchtop planer.

A selection of parts cut out to build the stand. I've done a bit more since, but it's stil just a selection of odd shaped pieces of wood. But next week it may be starting to look like... something

Anyway, thats what keeping me busy in the shed

Welcome Adrean

We are cutting hardwood to extend our veranday/deck to make the wife happy and to make me a happy I'd like to build a roofed one overlooking the creek at the house when "Beer o'clock hits" ;). Looking at building a killing slab and meat house to hang home kills,  followed by a smoke house.

We were set to travel to a mates property to cut him 6x2 rails for his new cattle yards but he's now looking at steel yards... :(

welcome to the forum adrean,

right now we're cutting a lot of aspen and some black locus for a shop, we just finished expanding our drying barn, added on a 12" X 32" space, looking to fill it up with various hardwoods, have access to a lot of cherry, some hickory and red/ white oak. would love to get some walnut drying. hopefully some of the wood we cut last fall and early this spring will be dry enough to use once the shop is done.

here is a picture of the drying barn, still needs some siding at some point. the posts are black locus, all the rest is aspen, all milled from our own trees.

Nice pics in your gallery. But they are not in your posts.

You can go to your post, and click modify. Then go to your gallery and click on the pic you want...(the pic will enlarge from the postage stamp size)..then scroll down to where you can click on "wanting to add to your post..or similar wording". Then go back to your post and click on Preview to see what your post looks like before clicking on Post.   Should work to get your pics up.
