Veneer Mills in or around maine?
« on: April 05, 2008, 04:36:41 pm »
Does
anyone know where i can find a Veneer mill in or around maine. Ive been told by my forestry teacher that there are several big companies in Canada that will buy Veneer logs in a bundle or a few at a time. Ive been told that they will send a scaler down from a local yard that collects the wood to scale and determine how much each log is worth and will usually write out checks right there.  I would like to know how far any of these companies are from central maine and where i can reach them at. Im interested because i have several veneer quality Oaks and Rock maples down here.

Get ahold of E.D. Besseys out of brownville.  That is who I sell my logs to, and they give a good price. They aren't a sawmill, but they buy wood.

Well you have one of the largest Veneer buyers in the Country at Presque Isle, Maine

Columbia Forest Products

(207)-764-4428

They buy most of our hardwood Veneer from our Marketing Board area in Western NB.

They will send their scaler, possibly Tyler Smith, around to scale and stamp the end of the log. Tyler lives in the same county as myself.  ;)

Pre-commercial thinning pays off. :)

i had seen the columbia forest products website but they dont list what they will give for MBF.  They also dont tell you what they are looking for in the way of logs, not really any specs just tell #'s.

I don't know of many mills that will do that. Our Marketing boards do publish mill specs and prices though, and it's good to call the Mill in your case for latest prices.

Here is a scanned copy of the prices from the local Forest Products Marketing Board. The prices quoted are worked out for our Board because we have two wood yards that a local trucker hauls from, to Columbia. If you deliver your own the prices are a bit higher, so much a thousand for delivery. They have been good to deal with and if it weren't for Columbia then the wood would end up in pulpwood, or sawlogs. Prices have fallen in the last 2-3 years like anywhere you sell wood.

With veneer there are many grades that a log can fall into.  Listing all of them on a website would be a hassle, not to mention that they are changing all the time.

My experience with veneer is  that the buyer wants a veneer quality log first and a certain species second.  This is probably one reason why you couldn't find any real specifics on their website.
