Does that bud cap have to be pulled off before the bud flushes out with new growth in the spring?
Two winters, I stapled paper popcorn sacks over the terminal bud of my red oak, and the paper survived rain, snow, sleet, wind...and kept the deer from chewing that bud. But in the spring, I had to remove them as the bud began to grow. On some, I thought I'd waited a day or two too long, as there was a couple inches of new leaves unfolding, but they survived quite well.
