Stephen, the red one was my father in law,s a 300 cc Honda 4wd. this machine works on high revolution, strong but not as mine.
Mine is the blue one, Honda Foreman 400cc  1996. Those machine are work horses. As tractors, strong on low revolution. Always on 4wd. It has No transfer case even if 4wd ( the engine was turned 90 degrees )  front drive shaft in line with the back one from the base of the engine . Has rear full axle and the hitch ball is on this axel (no mather the weight you put on it it is the tire that take the load, not the suspension like those *A* suspension on many ATV.  But ground clearance is less than those *a* suspension ATV.  The only problem I had all those years is a front drive shaft. Bought it used in 1998,,,,,I would recommend this ATV, very reliable  (of course we used it under it,s limits and did good maintenance.) See you

You cut the trunks of those into firewood  ???  If they were solid they were worth a lot as sawtimber or more if they were veneer quality.

Bonjour, Roger !

I am very impressed with all that you accomplished with an ATV  8)

Did you build the forwarder-trailers ?

You must have fairly dry land ?

Your house and cabinets are  very handsome !

     Salut a tous!!
Corley5, I know it was a CRIME to take those trees into firewood...yes they were solid with more than 50% heart...I  like my forest and no one will log trees with a skidder on my land. My uncle had a lot beside ours, he dad +- 10 vans logged in our road......the road was *scarified * (highly damaged by logs) and became a creek, he was suppose to fix it....the poor man got a liver cancer and died.....I had the road fixed and some other road done    $5,000 later no one will log on my roads with a skidder except me and a tractor when it is dry... I,ll buy a tractor when I,ll can (house is not paid...)Now if we come back to our maples....they were so big I could not even dream to log them with ATV,,their weight would kill me in my slopes...I have a lot of 16 to 24in.maples (lot have never been harvested).. sawing and veneer quality...a lot easyer to haul. I want you to hate me....I did a 42 in.hard maple a few years ago but it was sick .....Usually I take sick and crooked trees for firewood...but I know what you meant,,,those monsters are unsual....see you
Sprucebunny!   With time it is unbelievable (geeee this word is hard to spell....) what we can do with an ATV...and good fowarders. I bought them near Quebec city 13 years ago, a few reparations but still working. They are mini-fowarders , load stays at level with the tandem wheels, on flat land I put 150fb of soft wood (8-10-12 footers ) the Honda does not suffer from pulling. Paid them $650 each (it worth it). Thank you for the compliments on our cabinets....now you know that I have a wife lthat have taste and demands...hahaha   Is it your J5 and fowarder (trailer and clam) we see on your photos...nice photo too

To commercially harvest your timber, require short wood logging only where the logs are cut to length at the stump and then removed with a rubber tired forwarder to prevent the undesired road damage as was caused by the tree length logging.

We sold a sugar maple veneer log once upon a time 14' long and 24" on the small end for 1,900.00.  It wouldn't take many of those big logs to buy yourself a pretty DanG nice tractor.

Hi Corley5,,,I might have a few of those nice logs (forest is over 150 years old)BUT I need to buy my tractor to log them,,,, but to have the $$$ to buy the tractor I,ll have to sell some logs.... it really look like an endless wheel...but soon, things gonna go better,,, payments on the f250 will be way back and then it gonna be tractor time and logging time. I also have nice logs of basswood, white cedar  many over 20in.and clear but overhere the market is low. Price of maple went down but good quality always have a nice price. I also have some nice yellow birch 16 to 18 in., some nice black ash.....nice money ....that is growing every minutes.....thanks for your reply and advise. See you

Hi  WDH   !!! thanks for the compliment, those cabinets were made from black walnut from your country,,,,we do not have them overhere, too cold.   I've seen on your link very nice *chest* (right term   I wish) and joined in a very hard to make *tenon -mortaise*,,,,very nice and precise work.  One is made of red cedar I think but the other one is it black cherry?    are they your wood?  Have a nice day.

Hi m. Ron Scott !!    I know what you mean but I think that those machine are so big ( the skidder on my uncle and our land was a *Clark* with +- 6 to 7ft high tires) and I understand the logger , he wanted to make his money as fast he could (normal). If the roads are not very hard there will be damage done. That automn it was rainy and the logger did his job,,,,but I suffered all the inconvenients.....but it is away now and I will log myself using the experiences and the knowledge  of the members of*your* very nice forum.  Thanks.

Yes Roger, I milled the lumber for those chests with my wonderful little Woodmizer LT15.  The cherry and cedar came off my property.  I have always wanted cabinets made from Black Walnut.  You have given me inspiration ;D.

Ibseeker   thanks for the compliments...I made the plans of my home because I,ve seen none that I liked. I,t looks like a colonial american, and we add a *mud room* that is typical american (Usa) between the house and garage.
I looked at your photos.....is the equipment all yours?
Is it red pines on the truck load?   and was it on a plantation?
On the lot were I live, 2 years ago I had surplus trees from our goverment, I,ve planted 1,000 Norvegian spruces, 600 yellow birch and 500 larch (tamarak). I do not know if those grow where you live.  Bye, have a nice day.

I will echo what Ron said,a forwarder can do a nice job.I had some of mine cut. They used a grapple/winch skidder on one place, kinda of a hard spot to get a forwarder in.They hauled it to a yard for the forwarder to pick up.I had my doubts, but I was really watching them on that job.One thing I noticed they did not try to haul a cord at a time.I would come up to them with only a couple 16 footers on and if they were good size one only one. They did a very nice job,but I also insisted upon it.I was up in the woods daily to make sure it was being done the way I wanted.I would of kicked him off my land if he would of started to make a mess. But I've been watching this guy cut for 20 years too. He's always done a nice job.One job was done in Aug and one was done in late winter, early spring. It does depend a lot on who is doing the cutting and driving of the equipment.I make it a point to stop at logging sites when they are done.Really get some eye openers at times, but sometimes it looks real good.Too bad that loggers all get a bad name. Some bring it on themselves, but others can do the job right.Like I have heard from some loggers that make a mess, well you have to get the wood out. Yes,you do,but it can be done neatly.Just takes a little more time and planning. If you do bring a logger in,check out his last jobs.If you don't like what you see, check out another one.Beware of the one that will be there in a month too.A good logger has jobs lined up for a year.

The 50 % heart in the hard maple will turn off the veneer buyers. They won't take over 30 % in maple. I saw quite a few role by on the way to the pulp mill, on a town woodlot we were managing. Even some big birdseye, they didn't want them for figure, 50 % heart.  :'(

Roger, by prairie do you mean cleared field? ;) Now Alma, that area up there is like prairie. ;D

Hi Yote1:

How much will this one fetch, it's 25 inches at breast height and 68 feet tall. It's not on an optimum site, it's a harvested cedar stand. But, it's a pretty decent site because there are 26 inch aspen 77 feet tall. According to NB standard volume tables it's about 1 cord of wood or about 500 bf. First limbs are at 20 feet. What's that worth? ;D

Sometimes trees are worth more than $$.  ;)

     Hi everyone!
Thecfarm, you and Ron are right 100%.....many loggers work right, others want to do as much money they can and don,t care about the mess. My uncle did not watch that logger and as I told you I had to pay for the damages....but I,ve learned. On your site, the pines were yours ? must get nice clear planks,,,,very nice logs.

Swampdonkey,  I,m wrong when I call my CLEARANCE a prairie (mon petit accent francais hahaha) my french accent....but between us (family) we called it this way.
Over here buyers will buy 50% heart hard maple BUT the price will go downnnnn quite fast (I never sold any up to now but the prices are the one in the syndicat (union) book) october 2007
hard maple  14in +, foot log, heart 1/3       $3,200 mbf
                        14in +    heart 1/3 to 1/2        $2,200 mbf
but for others it will fall from $3,000 to $1,100 mbf     a nice drop. But I never experienced it (sold any).
the 25 in. yellow birch is very nice

Yote1, welcome on the board, you,ll find a family over here, I,m new also and everyone were very kind with me . Where are you from.....
Over here in Quebec, white birch some times worth more $ than yellow. My big yellow birch is the only one that big (+- 40 in. and +- 50ft before first limbs). but I,ve read that for veneer the mills can take to 30in.......and all the infos we can get are usefull. In fact I have a few nice yellow birch but I have more hard maple...but with hard maple you only know the value when it is down (small heart or big heart) and some veneer buyers also look at the size of yellow birch heart.... see you all.

thanks for the welcome, i'm from north central WI, as for the yellow birch i must correct myself, they are buy for saw logs note veneer, i dont know the buyer or as i said before if this is true, but have heard it from 2 different people. i asked what the finished product was (cabinets, floor,ect...) no info. none the less them are for sure the largest birch ive seen. and 26" aspen WOW been alot of years since there was anything like that around here. spent most of my winter taking aspen (easy access and pills up fast) i should be hauling a load first of the week, i will see if i can get any more info on the y-birch.
just for you all to compare:
hard maple: veneer-900.00, #1-575.00, #2-400.00, cull-200.00
50-60% hearts drop1 grade, over 60-70% drop 2 grades, over 70 is cull
this buyer buyes mainly saw logs resells veneer, as also cut way back and has become real tite on scale last couple weeks.
veneer buyer:
hard maple grade 1-3500.00, #2-2500.00, #3-2000.00, #4-1400.00, #5-1100
this buyer is strict when grading but is also very fair. dont know as to if the have cut back yet.

we have hade a real good winter here other than a few days high temps below zero have had little snow, which has melted 2 different times. makes the mills fill up fast. i find it very interest to see the difference in timber markets throughout the regions. Thats all for now

This yellow birch is not real old (well that's relative) because the whole place burnt in the early 1900's when my grandmother was very young. I also found old cedar stumps that were burnt out. So maybe 100 years old, they live a lot longer than that. The aspen would be the same age and are dying off now, dad cut 300 cords of aspen alone on 10 acres in 1984. The regrowth is 6-8 inches now at dbh. I thinned a stand of mixed growth by my house that had large tooth 45 feet tall and 8-10 inches in circular clumps into it. It was cut in 1994. Sure fast growing stuff. We were spacing hardwood and fir and some trembling, the trembling were nowhere near the growth as the large tooth.

Here's a 32 inch large tooth :D

Here's an 18 inch white birch. ;D

Here's a couple 26" dbh widow maker aspen I call them.

I don't want anything to do with the dang things with them up swung branches. Run like the dickens.

Pre-commercial thinning pays off. :)
