cutting end off fallin butt logs

Need some advice on which would best suit the purpose. Im looking at either the Sthil MS 440 or Ms 460 both with 28" bars OR the Husky 372XPG also with 28" bar....all are priced about the same HP is about the same cc ratings are about the same....any suggestions?

hey atlast. Although I am a Stihl fan since day one, you won't go wrong with either of your choices. I find the huskies a little tougher when your bucking on the skidway due to there spring anti vibe set up as opposed to Sthil's rubber mounts. I'm running the 44's it is my favorite power to weight combo. I'm curious though why you would wand to run 28in. bars. I only run 18's on all mine. 28in severly changes the balance of your saw, and increases the chance of a tip to ground contact , and a whole lot of extra time and expense sharpening a long bar. As well a long bar really sucks up alot of extra h.p. out of the saw. I don't know what kind of run of butt logs you are dealing with, but 2cuts with an 18in bar is still a 36 in tree, and they are getting rare... best of luck...burlman...

Wow what a regional difference.  Our precommercial thinning crew runs 372's and a old 044 with 28" bars.

I have to agree here I don't think you can go wrong with any of those choices although I would probally lean towards the 372 just because I have fallen in love with the Husky anti-vibe setup,my 385XP has very little vibration compared to some of the other saws I own like the 044.Regional differences are right I only run 24" and 32" on my saws except the smaller ones like 029 etc...18" on a 044 why don't you run atleast a 20" just wondering..

I run a 16" or 20" bar on my Ken Dunn 372 and I can almost will the trees off the stump because it cuts so fast and effortlessly. I`ve run a 34" with full skip round ground in some big maple, beech, and oak on this saw with good results but I like the short bars on this saw. If I need to run the long bar for more than a few cuts I go for the 385.

thanks for the advice....the 28" bar is what came on the saw...I primarly use it to cut the " messy" ends off butt logs and or the cut the flair....I gotta say..this things runs like the preverbiale (sp) raped ape....TONS of power nicely balenced...a very comfortable saw....I see the point on the chain cost....the place I bought it from will sell me new chains for 25 bucks...not to bad but Ill tend to sharpen the one thats on it til its just not useable anymore...they threw in a gallon of bar oil and 6  oil mix for 5 gallon containers...a bar guard a file and ...oh yeah..umm...a hat...

           Glad to hear your happy with your new saw,I did notice one thing though you said your dealer will sell you new chains for $25  ,you can go and order some sweet Oregon 72LG round ground chisel chain from CCD for $9.95 for a 20" roughly $11-14 for a 28" so you may want to go that route 2 chains for the price of one..

Thanks for the link to CCD Rob, they have some great prices. I was always a Stihl fan until my son gave Patty a Husky for X-mas. Now I can't decide which one to get next.

I looked at both the 440 and the 460.  I went with the 440 mostly because it was $200 US less.  Were the two saws closer in price at your dealer?
