Can one of you chainsaw gurus tell me what the easy start option on the stihl saws is and how it works?

Thanks Kevin. Any one have an opinion on this feature? My wife want a saw and needs something easy to start without a whole lot of pullling.

Some people like it but the rope needs to be pulled to it's full length. I much prefer the conventional system, bring the piston up to compression and give it a short quick pull.

When I first read your post, I was at the time talking to a friend of mine, and he was telling me about his new discovery...trading in his Stihl for the new Easy Start. Said he likes it real well, and appreciated the ease of starting. He's happy. Said he doesn't mind a bit shutting the new one off, as it is so easy to start again.   For what ever that is worth to ya... :)  He also said it has a primer button that likely helps too.
I think you just need to pull the cord a few times to store up the energy, and when enough, it cranks the saw. Try one out at the dealer...I suspect they will show you one.

I will try one shortly after I get back home. I'm just trying to get a little info and opinions in the mean time. Knowledge is power.

Easy start... Great idea for people without the arm strength to start a normal saw.

If you are OK with a normal starter, then it's extra weight and more parts to break, but if it makes a saw usable for someone that has trouble starting a normal saw, then it's worth it.

Cheers

For myself, I got the arms and think it's a waste of $50. For Lindy, who can't move as good as she usta could, it'll be a good thing I think. Actually I really think she'll try the saw a time or two decide sawing ain't for her and then I'll use it then for a limbing saw. :D :D

Just avoid it, it makes it overly easy to flood the saw, and weights quite a bit as well. smiley_old_guy smile_banjoman

I am not a fan of this feature but it has resulted in sales to people who are intimidated by anything without electric start. :D

I allways drop start, with the left hand on the rope, because of severe Arthritis that is worst in the right one - pain, yes- but it works without an easy-start.....

Saw Troll, being left handed I used to start saws that way until a mean tempered 075AV  swung against my leg while on high idle. Now it is on the ground or between my knees.

I don't have any mean tempered saws...... :) 8) 8) :D

....but I use the chain brake when I have the slightest doubt where the bar will go, and fast idle is active.

I have had 2 smaller saws do that and I Thanked God when they didnt start when the cutters caught the jeans. I have since then invested in some chaps, but still only wear them 5-10% of the time.

::)Hmm, I use protective trousers 99.999% of the time, unless I am just starting a saw to check something out, like carb adjustment.

That is what I was doing at the shop. Saws are like junkyard dogs, they are not particular about when and where they bite. :D
