sawmill needed in Northern VA
« on: April 18, 2003, 04:56:43 pm »
I need a sawmill operator for some business ventures, and I have access to a lot of logs, all different types.
I take down BIG trees regularly, and if you guys saw (no pun intended) some of the logs I have cut into chunks or firewood,
you would be pi$$ed. I know I am. :'(
Recently,
A  5' x 10' silver maple.
A  4' x 20' douglas fir.
A  4' x 9' norway maple.
A  30" x 18' white oak.
Black walnuts!
On and on.....

O-kay, no response yet, how about some advice on a reasonable starter mill? Probably be more fun to mill my own.
I have a Stihl 066 mag, and a Husky 3120XP that I could use. Pricing and size of logs are my 1st concern.

Thanks.

According to your first post, you referred to BIG logs. How big is BIG??
Most sawmill companies have an owner contact list. You could call any of the manufacturers and probably find someone near you.
If you want to saw BIG logs, you may be needing a Mobile Dimension, or a swing blade, such as Peterson, Lucas or Brand X, which is really a company. I am surprised no-one on the forum pointed out these options  Let us know what you have and need and someone will surely respond. ;)

I occasionlly run into 3' - 4' butt logs, and run across 20" - 24"
Logs all the time. Plus I can get access to all kinds of standing timber.

I take it you work for a tree service? Tells us a little more about what you do.

To start, your best bet will probably be to hire a Custom Sawyer.  You were on the right track.  Whether there is one near you I don't know but you can call Woodmizer's 800 number and they will tell you the closest ones.

You will eventually have a good time milling your own, but not with a chainsaw if there is any quantity. Stick around and get a feel for bandsaws, swingsaws, circle mills and chainsaw mills. We have an abundance of all of these who are members and you can't shut them up once they get started. :D

I run a tree service (20+ years experience), and have evolved to now trying to be more of a contract climber, and sub out labor and hauling. On my big jobs, I hire a bobcat contractor
and can get the logs out whole, and delivered as part of the job cost.
I'm bidding a huge job now with a LOT of cedar, I will haul them out long and figure out later what's next. I also have over  1000 bd ft. of black walnut stashed in various places.

I like the idea of contacting wood-mizer, (or anyone else),
that sounds like a good way to hook up with a sawyer.

You guys, (and gals) sound like you really get into it.
Well, I love trees, and think recycling should not be an option. I'm tired of wasting good wood.
I'm open for any suggestions.
Thanks,
Dave

Yep, we take it seriously.  Least ways as seriously as a bunch like this can be. :D

That's what started me sawing.  I saw folks clear a lot, install a mobile home and then, a couple or 3 months later, buy a bunch of boards for a deck. Heck they just threw away all they would have needed.  I decided to try to rectify that. :D

Hi-
I'm a new member, and a new owner of a very used Mobile Dimension 128 mill. I live in Leesburg, VA.

I'd love to get at some of those trees you mention, but I don't have a way to transport them. My mill is theoretically portable, but I don't see myself toting it anywhere anytime soon, as it is set up as a stationary mill on a huge trailer.

Any chance you could bring some logs over and we could split the lumber that we mill ???

Hey, Lynn!  Glad to see that you made it over here. This is THE place to talk sawmilling. Stick around and learn with us.
Your mill sounds like its the same as mine.
