Sucker Rods

Anybody know what the traditional wood for windmill sucker rods is? ??? ???
'98 LT40HDD/Lombardini, Case 580L, Cat D4C, Ford 851 tractor, JD 3032 tractor, Husky 346 and 372XP's. !998 and 2006 3/4 Dodge 5.9 Cummins and a 1966 Chevy C60 w/ dump bed.

   Ash maybe? I got some ends from a demo job I did this summer. Stinkin junkman got the pump jack. Anybody wantem?

Ash was used up here.  I had a hand in sawing the logs and making new rods for the wells at both Grandparents farms.  Both wells have long since been replaced with 4" wells with submersible pumps  :) :)  The old wells are still there pump jacks and all.

Wellllll, I don't have any Ash. Got any ideas for substitutes. I also figured cypress, but alas, none of that either. My next thought was white oak but thought it might be a little heavy.

leeb--if you think the oak is going to be toooo heavy---one guy suggested using a overhead door spring--attached somewhere near the top of the windmill--so it aint pulling sideways on the sucker rod--and adjusting the tension accordingly--this guy was using 1 1/2 light elec conduit!!!!!!!!!! he said it would never break--!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ve heard of using 1/4" galvanized pipe also. I just thought I would try to stay traditional as much as posible.

I think cypress would be a good choice.  Naturally water/rot resistant and much lighter than white oak.
