Over the Michigan Dateline?
« on: July 09, 2001, 11:21:25 pm »
G'day Guys,

Can anyone tell me why there is a 1 hour time difference for a thinnish sliver of Michigan?  Why didnt they just make the state line the boundary??
One of those funny things.  Indiana also?  Must make it confusing sometimes? depending on where you live?
Get to the shop and its closed!??  Haha, Im pulling your legs with that one. No such thing as time zones down here (gives you an idea of the size of the place!).
Cheers
Charlie the Student.

Good Day KiwiCharlie

I'm not sure of why it happened but how about this for an explanation.
I've found that there are 3 ways to do things, the right way, the wrong way, and the government way.
Care to guess who was responsible for time zones.

Here in Minnehaha we're on Central Time. So I drive down to Auburn, Abalama and find out that they are on Central Time too, but right across the border in Georgia...they are on Eastern time. That would work great if you lived in Georgia and worked in Abalama (errrrr Alabama). You could sleep late and still get to work on time. :D

I once had a place on the lake in Abbeville, AL. The state line and time zone change was the west side of the lake. My wife would ask "you're drinking a beer and its only 11:10 AM". Ankle deep in water I'd respond "Shud up, its 10 minutes after noon where I stand," Got rid of the place on the lake so had to get rid of her too 8)

I know there are large parts of Indiana that don't go on daylight savings time ::)  I don't know why.  At least time zones make some kinda sense, you got to draw the line somewhere (but it would make more sense to do it on a state line).

Anyone care to guess the Hoosiers' logic on that one?

The story I heard about time-zones was that they were created by the railroads.  They didn't care which state they were in only that they were on time. :-/

Back in april I saw a story on Daylight savings time and Indiana. One part of the state that does not use daylight savings time is split by the timezone. They talked with a guy who gets up in the morning, drives to his favorite coffee shop, drinks coffee till he is almost an hour late for work, then drives to work, arriving on time, ten minutes before he left home!

More then you need to know here:

That small part of Michigan in the western UP chooses to stay on central time with the State of Wisconsin since much of their business and economic trade is with Wisconsin due to their closeness.

They were almost a part of Wisconsin at one time, but it never turned out that way.

G'day Guys,

Thanks for the input.  Funny how these things happen.
I bet you get the time jokes fairly regularly.  Just like Kiwis/Aussies get the sheep jokes.
The business and economic reasons make a lot of sense.
Cheers
Charlie.

Depends on what kind of business Kiwi.

The farmers still have to deal with the livestock at sunup and the chickens don't pay much attention to time zones or daylight savings. :D

Tom! I'm astounded! You mean to tell me them chickens down in Florida don't pay attention to daylight savings time?!  Don't y'all give 'em watches? I've a mind to report this to the Minnesota Chicken Growing Association (MCGA).  Also, they have daylight saving time so the farmers can take care of the livestock BEFORE sunup.   :D

Ok here's the story on Time zones. :)

http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/PrinterFriendly.cfm?ArticleId=FET_E31

And I bet that most Canadians don't even know it. Just goes to show ya how our educational system regards our country's history.

Here is an extrapolation from the International Meridian Conference, Washington D.C.

Here's a story about Canadian time zones

Being a Hoosier I feel I must respond.  Indiana is split like Michigan, no big deal.  I just wander why everyone wants to know what is wrong with us since we do not change to daylight savings time.  My response is much the same as Tom's, does it get light any earlier or dark any later?  Why does everyone else feel they must artificially try to change  time by adjusting their clocks?  Daylight and dark still come at the same time.

Thats what I say. I wish they would leave the time alone. I guess I dont care where they leave it long as they left it somewhere.

In Australia one of the time zones is different by 30 minutes. I guess they couldn't' agree so decided to go half way.

30 mins is also the same time difference between the Maritimes and Newfoundland. In Sask. they don't mess with the time and I wish they left it alone also. It doesn't influence the sun in anyway, all it does is mess up your bio clock for a few days.

If they are changing it cause some lazy bloke doesn't get outta bed early in the mornin during the winter months, then let's put an end to it now. :D  I like gettin up early and I don't usually get to sleep before 12 am, unless I doze off, then I wake up and hardly sleep the rest of the night. Leave the DanG clock alone, all a mess of foolishness :D :D
