just a little shed
« on: August 05, 2007, 07:39:04 pm »
Well...

I'm sure there are others in the same boat as me here, it seems that I don't have enough time to read all the info on here, let alone post any replies with my great typing skills.  aka 10 words per minute.  Anyway I thought I better share a little with you all..

After many attempts to put up photos here, I might actually have it down!  Since I have been a mill owner it seems I have mostly been cutting for other people.  But now I finally found time for ME.  I decided to cut a little lumber to build a shed to house some 4-wheelers at my hunting ranch that is 2 hours away from my home and mill.  I built a lot of the walls etc. and sorta put it together near the mill at my house and then would take it apart wall by wall and transport it on a trailer or flatbed.  Here is one of the first photos taken.

lets just see if this works before I continue with my story..

I may be getting this now...

While cutting a guy has a lot of time to think and I started thinking while walking back and forth milling, 'why not make this thing 2 stories?'  So here is what it looked like after a little thinking.

I sould be telling ya what it all consists of..  The lower part is framed with fir 2X6, the floor joists are 2X8, upstairs walls are 2X4 and the rafters are a 3X6 which are exposed.  Deck posts are 18"X 18" and drilled 24" wide and 4' to 5' deep.  Deck posts are redwood 6X6 and other odd stuff I had laying around.  Oh, and there is 6 yards in that 10'X16' pad.  Coulda gone 4 stories up.

Just finished the roof last week and now working on the doors.

Looking good 8)  Did you frame the walls and then pour the concrete?  It seems that way from the pics.  If you did, is there are reason you took that approach?  I've never seen it done that way before.

I put as much together as I felt was time saving and then took it apart and moved it.  The green on the bottom is copper green, which prevents dry rot and keeps termites away.

I have lived in places not 1/2 as nice as your shed  :D

Sweet having that JD. I keep meaning to buy a Bobcat or JD. Main thing is my local zoning .. I have to garage it.

Did that metal roof cost a bunch and did you do it yourself?

Glad to see I am not the only one that "thinking" gets me further into trouble all the time!

Looks good.  We did the same thing with a hunting cabin, built it in the church parking garage, dismantled it, and hauled it to the site.  It went up in 3 days, shingled!  The evolution has transformed it into a insulated, cedar lined, air tight, wood heated, double paned windows, ad a dry well so dishes can be done inside now.

rebocardo,

The roofing was about $800- the roof is 8 1/2' X 27' - not cheap in my opinion and yes I did it my self.

Robert,

I am gonna do Redwood board and bat on the upstairs, 1X10 and 1x3.  I have it cut and hope to start putting it on soon.  The downstairs I was thinking stucco, mainly from a wildfire standpoint.  But as it comes closer to doing it I can cut board & bats for next to nothing...so I am leaning towards that.  As far as when I can start on yours...just as soon as I finish mine. :)  5...10 years??

Today I built the doors and got them hung.  When I put on the siding I'll cover the plywood doors with something, but for now it keeps the rats out.

Like I mentioned before, the rafters are 3x6 and I just sheeted the roof with plywood.  Wanted the exposed beam look but didn't want to over do it.

The things I purchased were; concrete, plywood for sher & roof, windows, screws, misc bolts/washers/nuts and of course the metal roof.  I bought some metal to make all the brackets for the posts.  It is amazing what you can find when you don't want to spend any money.

Robert,

Naw, I just cut them and bolted them up.  I didn't get that fancy.  (it is, just a shed after all)

I didn't know that was your tree house in the WM mag until today.  Congrats - I am sure there were posts on here 'bout that, if so I missed them.  What a neat project.

Yes, That's my project in WM magazine, I was not a member of the Forum at that time so I am sure there is little or nothing on the forum about it.

Back to your project, hope you enter it into the WM personal best this year ;)

If you had a lap sider I would do a lap siding on that shed, it would look great!

I take it that flag is of California, boy, you are far away from here!!! ;D I don't think I could go help with that shed as promised :D :D

I built a horse run in with 1X10 & 1X4 board and batten. The 4 inch boards really look good.I saw this on a shed that I go by on the way to work.I finally saw someone outside so I could stop and ask about it.The only reason he did it that way,he got a deal on the 10 and 4 inch boards. It caught my eye at 50 miles mph.

A little more progress to report.  I got most of the board & bat material stained today.  About 90 1x10's & 90 1x3's.  Not all are in the photo here.  My camera took a s dump and had to go to a back up.  I'll have some more photos for ya all shortly.  I started putting up some of the inside Pine 1X6 the other day.  It took me 2 days to install the front door.  I'll explain that when I get a photo up.

Your boards look great in the picture.  What finish did you use? Did you coat all 4 sides?  I've only been coating 3 sides on my B&B and I'm just wondering if this might cause a warping problem down the road.

Regardless how you finish the B&B, the exposed side of the board will be shrink more, especially on the southwest exposure. Just like decking, one side shrinks less than the other, and the side that doesn't is the one protected. Cupping, or the tendancy to cup, will happen. Screwing the battens will help hold the edges of the boards, I've found.  :)

Qweaver,  I used Olympic siding stain, #704, transparent redwood.  It seems a little dark in the photo because it was not dry.  I wanted something that would cover the sticker stains yet not didnt want to paint them.

I painted 3 sides of the 1X10's and all 4 sides of the 1X3's.  My thoughts are water is not going to get behind the 1X10's.  (i say this based on other sheds i have with B&B that have no vapor barior and I've never seen a drop of water inside)  Water will seep in behind the 1X3 and stay damp.  I am even thinking of running a bead of caulking down the seem of the 1X10's.

Your project looks great.  I missed the start of your thread and I am still getting caught up on all of the pages.  Think I'm about 1/2 way.

BT - I never thought of the boards wanting to cup more.  I suppose I better get them up asap???  They will spend a day in the sun today drying then get stacked tonight.  I like the idea of screwing in the bats.  May I borrow that idea? :D

This is what I got done today.  I'm putting up Pine 1X6 - I decieded on shelves in the walls, that is what the holes are.  I'll finish/case them out with some 1/2" material.

Not sure why the photo is so bad ???  The spots are from the light, I think.  It sure is blury..

Those spots, I've seen them before. Did you bring your camera from the cold into a warm area? They look like condensation water droplets on the lense or on the camera pickup crystal.

I now have a stove, but a long way from having heat though.  I built a platform or stage out of 2x6 and 3/4 plywood.  Hardiboard will be put down on the plywood, then I think i'll thin -set some river rock on top of that.  Since I need something flat for the stove to sit on, as you can see at the bottom of the stove, maybe make a small concrete pad or use two peices of angle iron in the rock work with the v part of the angle pointed up, creating sort of a grove for each foot of the stove.

On the studs I'm going to put sheetrock up to the mantel height, then hardi board, then river rock up the wall.  I have not done any work with rocks and cement, so it will be a learning experience for me.

These are the 8X8's that support part of the upstairs.  They are fastened with brackets I made out of 3/8" plate with 5/8" bolts.  The lower buckets are also 3/8" plate with 5/8" bolts.

Here's a little progress to repot along with some photos.

I found this door, bought a piece of aluminim for a threshhold and and some weather stripping.   Made all the casing & trim/door stop out of scrap stuff laying around.

Sarted putting up the siding a while back - just now getting around to posting a photo.  It's Redwood 1x10.  I'll snap a line and trim the bottoms.  The battons are not up yet :( pretty slow going.  oh well, getting paid by the hour, right?? ;D

Here is putting together the stove area.

As mentioned before, the stove will sit on the little concrete pad and the river rock will come up to it.  This was the easiest with what I had to work with.  It;s anchored to the platform pretty well and left a couple bolts sticking out of the concrete so the rock work will tie into it.

The pine above the mantle locks the mantle in.  I did not have to fasten the 4x6 to anything - the photos are not real clear ???  They are better on the computer - maybe resizing them did something to the clarity?

The stove is all hooked up, pipe through the roof and the cap is on.  Have not had a fire in yet :-\  I didn't get to the rock yet.  It's easy enough to slide a piece of stove pipe up a few inches and set the stove to the side.  No photos of that yet..

Looking real good.  That stove will do the job.  Nothing beats wood heat.  My folks say that it is the warmest heat for the temperature :).  They insist on wood ;D.

Your project is awesome.  That siding is beautiful 8).

I cut some fir for flooring over the summer and this week planed it on both sides and T&G it .  It's 3/4 thick, 3", 5" & 71/2" wide X 12' long.  Going to stagger the widths.  Doesnt seem like much, but was kind of a milestone to get this done.  Have it stickered inside and hope to install in the next month of so.

Since last post I've got all the upstairs siding on.  Still have the bats & trim to do.  (see photo below)

And finally, had the 1st fire in the stove today.

Great project  8)

I'm glad you have a roof for the dozer ... I hate to see those nice old machines sitting out getting wet.

Your slab was 10x16 ? What's the dimensions of the upstairs ?

I don't like seeing them sit outdise either.  Yes, the slab is 10' x 16'.  The upstairs is 24' x 12' - it cant-a-leavers over one foot on the two long sides and it's 8' over the dozer.  It's flush on the deck/front door side.

Coon,

Actually, I do have a couple solar panels on a post to keep a couple of batteries charged and have a small invertor.  There is no power here.  I've got a small 1000 watt gen & a 3500 watt gen as more power is needes.

Some other progress includes finishing all the electrical from the battery/invertor box to the fuse box to all lights, switches and plugs - inside and out.  AND everything works..

Beautiful work- will be a pleasure to "occupy..."  :D

Your wood stove looks just like the one we just put in my daughter's house- actually heats too well and with the blower on the back, does a fantastic job heating the whole house.  Problem is, winter has disappeared here- was 61 yesterday morning when I got up at 4- cooled down some last night but supposed to be in the 60's today and tomorrow.  Not complaining, just saying, maybe global warming generates localized hot spots like we're in right now?

MM,

I don't recall what what it is.  After it dries it's hard to tell it has anything on it - which is what I wanted.

I had an old king size wooden bed frame that has storage.  So I took it apart, put one section on each wall, cut plywood slightly larger that a twin bed, mounted a 2x4 on the wall to support the plywood.  Now I'm waiting for someone to get rid of some twin mattresses.  Please no offers unless you pay for shipping. :)
