Butternut Logs
« on: April 07, 2003, 09:02:02 am »
In my neck of the woods I have not located any Butternut Logs. I have a BIN that carves and I would like to get one and surprise him. Any Iowa folk ever run across any Butternut? Oh by the way great forum. I may have to get the wife to flex her guns and post the picture. It could become a trend ;)
I owe I owe so its off to work I go....

Welcome SW Iowa Sawyer!  I'm from SE Minnesota!  There are a few Minnesotans on this forum too. One thing that surprised me when I moved up to Minnesota back in '72 is how many Iowegions live in Minnesota. :o

A BIG welcome to SW Iowa Sawyer! You live in such a pretty part of the state. Yes, bring the wife along, we'd enjoy meeting her too.

I could tell you to check with Ocooch Hardwoods, Richland Center, Wi. for butternut but I am not going to tell  a Hawkeye that keeps beating a Badger where to get anything.  Not only that but they make us Badgers sit on old rickety open bleachers when we go to Iowa
City for our annual trouncing.

Lyle,

Welcome to the Forestry Forum.

You need to build a folding seat and back to make your
trouncing a little more pleasant.

Oh ya,   Lyle,    GO HAWKS  ;D

There is a canker that has been going through the butternut and killing them off. If its standing dead it is most likely full of worm holes.

I have only sawn one butternut in the last 3 years and it was my own log. I sawd it into 4/4 for a desk I was going to make.... ::)

OOOOHHHH, wormy Butternut.  Sounds like "value added" to me !! :) :)

Second, it is violently opposed; and
Third, it is accepted as self-evident.

Butternut is a truly beautiful wood when  finished properly.  Our living room, 14X27 ft., is finished with random length random width tongue and groove, boards run from 4 to 8 inches wide.  We have just under 1000 ft. in it, walls and ceiling.  Sand it real good up to 220 grit, then I put natural Velvit Oil on and the went over it with a 400 wet/dry paper.  Turns out a rich brown.  Electric Al, they won`t let you bring a seat in, they are sadistic, at least we have a better band!!!

Welcome SW Iowa Sawyer and Lyle!

I've been out of the "loop" for a few days.  Good thing ElectricAl left the computer unattended!  I slid right in and made myself at home. ;D

We just got some 1 1/2 week old orphan goats that need lots of tending.  Nothing like having a baby in the family again!  :-/ We borrowed the mother that won't take care of her own baby, so I could milk her and feed the babies myself.  ::)  She can't tell me no, even though she'd like to. ;D

SW Iowa Sawyer,
We don't hardly ever see butternut.  We have only sawn 10 or 20 butternut logs since we first started in April 1993.  Check with your local loggers.  Or maybe Midwest Walnut could put you in touch with a possible source.

Linda

Lyle,
Don't let ElectricAl fool you.  His idea of sports is racing, racing, and more racing!  We have die hard Hawkeye fans in our family.  As you can tell after Al's outdated comment about bringing in a chair, that he hasn't been to a game in decades! :D

There is very little butternut in our area. We had one that was huge we cut down where we built our pond. It was also the first tree I cut with our new WM. My son and I built him a bed frame out of it. If you get a chance I would like to see a picture of your LR Lyle, it sounds real nice. I'd show a picture of my sons bed but you can't see it for the mess in his apartment room :D

Normf:  I would love to show  pictures of my living room and all of its butternut, unfortunately I do not have a photo scanner as of yet.  In fact I`m still trying to get past the two finger stage of typing,  I learned on an Underwood and Royal, guess that dates me.  By the way, all you have to do is rub the butternut down with lemon oil about once a year and it looks just as it did new.  GO BUCKY!!!!
