Language Barrier Blocks Rape Rap
« on: July 22, 2007, 03:39:05 pm »
ROCKVILLE, Md. —  Charges against a man accused of repeatedly raping and molesting a 7-year-old girl were dismissed last week because the court could not find an interpreter fluent in the suspect's native West African language.

Mahamu Kanneh, a Liberian native who received asylum in this country and attended high school and community college here, according to The Washington Post, was denied a speedy trial after three years awaiting a court-appointed interpreter who could speak the tribal language of Vai.

Today I have read this piece of news from the Foxnews station which is posted in the internet. I was very astonished and angry when I have read this article. I think and I am sure lots of people agree with me that justice in USA it is not so swift or hard when it comes into  sentencing or punishment. Because no interpreter the man leaves the court room what about the victim and her family. I am very sure they are running in pain and anger. I think the justice system in US should be revised amd modified and bee more serious with these criminals.
Or send this man to Qatar and see what will happen.

If this idiot attended high school and college here, there's no reason he can't speak english. If it was my daughter he would understand the 45 slug.

If that was my daughter , there would be a second trial ............... Mine .

As CLL sayes , that nut case has to understand english some .. he did attend high school and college ...
Theres one that came in the right door that should be shown the left one real quick ...  Sending him back would cost less then keeping it in jail .

I have a feeling the appeals court will allow this to continue.  people get angry about this sort of thing.

the interesting part is the washington post found 3 translaters in one night.   Then again that's about par for the course for some government employees.

i'd say in reality, it's about 50/50 with good and the bad, and of the good, they're probably only worthwhile 50% of the time!

I wasn't going to reply to this one at first. I don't like to use the keyboard when I'm pis angry.
But I'm sure most have heard the Travis Tritt song "The Country Ain't Country No More"...

I'm feeling like "America Ain't America No More"!

And I'm going to blame this one on lawyers, in general, of which we seem to get most of our politicians. Back when they were all farmers, planters, and woodsmen we had "Statesmen" not polticians.

Have more to say, but won't....

From what I read it was a relative.  Send him back to Liberia on a plane  with half enough gas to get there with a parachute with a hole in it.  Sharks need to be fed too ya know.

The law is here to protect the guilty in the US.  Usually the accused has more rights than the victim and unfortuantely no matter how you spin it's mostly a political thing.  The guy was granted asylum here for I guess political reasons.  Why can't we say "we are revoking your petition for asylum, we don't need this.  Here is your one way ticket back to Liberia, there will be some "people" to meet you when you get off the plane." ;)

I'm sure Liberians see child rape in a little different light than our justice system does.

Rapists need to be disarmed.  That opinion got me kicked off a jury once.  And yes it was a rape trial.  I think everyone understands how to disarm a rapist.  Seems like a fairly effective deterrent to me.  :o

Back in 1980 I took a little trip down to Haiti to help build a little part of a church school.  While there, I learned a bit about that country.  Frankly, I found very little to admire about the way it was run, but I did like the way they handled the crime of Rape.  They would have a trial, hopefully a fair one, and if the accused was convicted they would immediately take him outside where a big crowd would be waiting.  The Bailiff would read an account of the crime to the crowd, then the accused would be released. :o  They only had about 2 rapes a year in the whole Country. ;D
