"Come get YOUR rattlesnake!"
« on: July 21, 2007, 06:06:10 pm »
That's what my lumber puller said to me yesterday. In a rather angry tone I might add! :D When I asked what in the heck he was referring to, he told me that he was "referring to that rattlesnake under YOUR lumber, so it was, therefore YOUR rattlesnake!" When I got over to the greenchain he showed me the stack of 1x8, now guarded by his helper, under which MY alleged ratttlesnake now resided. After rustling up a " Mexican backhoe" ( shovel  ;D), we started moving the boards. Well they were wrong. It wasn't MY rattlesnake. It was, however, MY water moccasin! At this time the snake was a little over three feet long. After some quick surgery, he was soon shorter than three feet long. :D After 'splaining' the difference between a "cottonmouth" and a rattler, my puller said, "when he struck the board I was stacking, I didn't look at him that close"! In his defense, the snake was curled up under the adjacent lumber stack and had quickly struck at the moving board and retreated. All my guy really saw was "that diamond shaped head". After being told he could have the snake for skinning, he was happy. Now it was his snake, no longer mine! :D

We kill a rattler or cottonmouth just about every year around the mill. Just one of the joys of life in the Florida "wilds".

My SIL got one with the rider this week. It reared it's ugly head up and he took care of that real quick. The Zero turn won. :D

I'm dreading doing any cleaning up in my barn.  I think it's a good excuse to procrastinate some more.  ;D

It looks like a juvinile Red Rat Snake.   They are death on roaches, crickets frogs and lizards.

They eat rodents when mature.

Yep, It was a Rat Snake. I usually will leave them alone except I couldn't tell exactly what is was tonight until it was too late. I let a pencil sized one go yesterday. Seems like it is snake week.
