Sawing short logs on the EZ Boardwalk
« on: June 24, 2007, 12:34:15 pm »
I was trying to saw a cherry burl about 18" long in the horizontal position with only one dog holding it and your right it came out and bent the blade.  I really didn't think it would hold but had to try.  The E Z Boardwalk has a dog that cams to tighten and really gets tight but I know it will take either two dogs or some other way of holding it. Does anyone have a picture of how to hold a burl like this?  Also is there a picture of a  fixture to hold a burl vertical?
After doing some sawing on our new EZ Boardwalk I'm really satisfied with it.

 When we sawed short logs, we put a board on the bunks for the log-Burl, then put one from lod stop to log stop. THEN, the clamp should hold it.

  Once you get a flat side, turn it down, and things are really steady from then on.
All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
   Second, it is violently opposed; and
   Third, it is accepted as self-evident.

What F.D.said and the real secret for me is to feed in very slowly so as not to "pull" the burl or short log. Keep the feed rate slow and steady.

I regularly saw short logs on the LT15.  The other day I thought I would get some pictures of the clamping procedure.  Once the log is clamped i grab it with both hands and give it a good shake.  If its solid in the clamp its ready to saw, if there is any movement it is definitely a good idea to re clamp it!!  Similarly if the log wobbles when you first go into the cut, back out and re clamp!!  ;)
