I guess SD was so intent on IDing this tree that he could not sleep.  Either that or he was thinking hexagonal thoughts about that BBQ table ;).

BUT I'm pretty sure it's......

Oglethorpe Oak Q. oglethorpensis named in 1940 for Oglethorpe County, Georgia, where it is most abundant. Named in honor of James E Oglethorpe, an English general and founder of the colony of Georgia.

We have a winner!  Someone was doing some internet research in the wee hours of the morning. :D  Oglethorpe oak was discovered by a UGA dendrology professor and named by Wilbur Duncan, a UGA botany professor.  It was the last tree native to Georgia to be identified.  It's range is tiny, restricted primarily to two small populations of the Georgia and South Carolina Piedmont.  Although the leaves give it the appearance of a red oak (as evidenced by the suggestions of laurel, Arkansas, shingle, and bluejack oak) the bark clearly puts it in the white oak group.

Atlantic, we are 1 hr ahead of Boston. I was standing at the table saw for that new barn door at 6:30 am.  :D :D :D Daylight is before 6 am here during summer.  ;)

I'd love to get my hands on a couple of these to plant at my place.

DL, how are they with shade tolerance?

I don't think they're one of the more shade tolerant oaks, but they don't need full sun, either.  You could plant them in an opening in the canopy and they should do just fine.  I can collect some seeds this fall :).
