What type of chain saw can be used to bring a tree down?
« on: May 29, 2007, 10:46:23 pm »

The other day a neighbor called me and asked me if can knock some trees down which there around four trees 4 meters height, never have done this before so I told him I will do that. I took my MS 660 chain then went to cut the trees down, I cannot believe how heavy the MS 660 when it hold horizontal man it is heavy even I have used 25 inch bar. I was thinking what type of chain saw  you use when you want to bring a tree down say like 12- 16 inch in diameter. I am very sure there are some Stihl made chain saw for that purpose light in weight. I know the MS 660 is good for milling is perfect, but I like the MS 650 much better and it is powerful when it comes for milling.

a lot of guys do use the 660 for felling.  and the rest wish they had one to use for felling :)

over here the loggers eat a lot of beans and potatoes!

I guess in all seriousness, it depends on how big the tree is, but for felling, plenty of power is a good thing.

There's a fine line between turning firewood into beautiful things and beautiful things into firewood.

For trees of 12 - 16" diameter a much smaller saw is better.
And, I don't think you will be doing much tree felling in Qatar.
It will therefore be worthwhile to invest in a smaller saw for such applications.
The ideal one would be a MS260 with a 16" bar and 26RM chain.

For small trees I use my MS-180 or MS-270 so I can get a proper notch.  But, I am still likely to buck them with my Husky 365 with a short bar once they are all down.

The MS361 is a newer and better design than the 260, and also will give you a bit more leeway for larger trees. They balanse perfectly with an 18" bar.

I also suggest Stihl RM chain, if your conditions is sandy...... ;)
