Modat's sawmill
« on: May 05, 2006, 08:27:34 pm »
Picked up my steel Wed and started cutting, welding and fabricating today. I have the main carraige framed up, I can't go much further because I need to get my v-casters, pillow blocks and pulleys.

Here's a few photos, it is a monster. The head stands 8'6" tall and 53" column center to center.

Well you have made a good start. One thing I noticed is the (what appears to be) square tubing over the other square tubing.  What size is this?  The reason I ask is over the years the need comes around to make a slide like what I think I see.  I never been able to find a square tubing locally that will fit over the other.

The columns are 3x3x 3/8" thick and the slide pieces are 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 1/4 thick.

There is about 1/8" of play around the slide.

I'm going to try to finish up the axle mounts and start on the motor mounts today but the wife wants me to go pick up a couch.

Yes, I think it is a shame they don't still make wooden nail kegs. You could give her one of them and tell her to sit on it until you were finished with the mill.  What is the world coming too?  A couch  :-[

You're thinking the wrong way HP, a couch is much more comfortable to rest on between welds. ;D

didn't make much progress Saturday, The couch I went to pick up was actually a sectional LOL. I ended up getting rid of 2 couches we had and moving the living room around. Its raining here today so I guess its a rest day today.

I'm not sure how I'm going to mount my motor yet, I want to motor to slide to engage the belt.

placing my order for bearings, v-casters, and a trailer spindle. Hopefully the wife doesn't have a big honey do list this weekend or weekend LOL (I typed LOL instead of using a FF smiley because I'm a stubborn redneck)

I need an opinion about my drive axle, the axle I want to use came out of a Lincoln town car. At its smallest diameter its 1 1/4". The axle flares up to 1.29" for 2" directly behind the tire hub. I'd like to mount the drive pulley directly behind the tire to keep my engine weight as close to the center of my columns as possible.

What this means is there will be approx 3 inches of unsupported shaft sticking outside my flange bearing. Do you guys think this type of solid shaft can handle the forces without breaking?

Thanks in advance. I have everything ordered except the pulleys and the lifting mechanics  8) I can't believe I finally started getting it put together.

Are you saying the axle flare is keeping you away from where you want to mount the drive pulley?

No, I can mount the pulley on the flare itself but I was afraid that having 3 inches of shaft sticking out from the bearing could cause shaft breakage.

Basically I'll have the Tire/ 1 inch space/ pulley/ flange bearing. I'm afraid a 1 1/4" shaft might break in this configuration.

To be honest, I think 1.25 is a little thin ...
but may work well... :P :P

as you describe it I dont see why your configuration would cause breakage..basically it is all right together...with little distance...if anything I would see that as stronger, with less flex???

What happened to this one??

I decided that a ready made car axle would be easier than welding a hub on that older circle mill arbor. I also kinda hated even thinking about cutting that one up, its off a very old friends home made circle mill that won't we around much longer. I'll probably keep that one and hang it over the door that I don't normalle use  ;D
