Acquiring Logs From Nat'l Forest
« on: May 08, 2007, 01:28:56 pm »
We have a new Woodmizer sawmill. We live by the Ouichita Nat'l forest south of Waldron, Ar. Does the forest issue permits for dead trees to be removed? Any suggestions on how to acquire logs? Thank you. Jerry

Welcome to the Forum, Jerry
Congrats on the new Woodmizer mill.
Tell us a bit about what you plan to do with it, and a pic or two (see the Help button above to get pics in your gallery) of your mill would be great.  We like pics.  :)

Contact the Forest Service supervisors office, and talk directly to them about removal of trees. They will have a policy, but don't be surprised that they just easily give them away. Too many would be in line to take them if they were available to anyone, and most people wouldn't be too careful how they pulled them out.
But it won't hurt to ask and find out.

Down here in Kisatachie National you locate the wood within 300' of the road mark it by the road with ribbon. Go to the work center mark it on a quad map and show every thing you wont in that area number and type of tree. Im sorry im having a brain fart i remember my ladys name and her helper but not her title, just tell they you wont to buy some trees. They will go out and paint the trees and figure your cost, and draw up a contract that you can accept or decline. That is on trees that are dead or dying and blow downs live or dead. They will charge you for and expect you to remove the whole log, saw log and pulp and most stuff must be winched from the right of way.
Pine is at a premium and most hardwood can be gotten as firewood. You can always ask if they have anything already written up that you could check out(excisting jobs that someone refused). I have gotten very nice syp with 4 16' logs for as high as 45. per tree and, 26 white oaks for 20. for all of them, and 15 erc. for 10. for all of them. If you tear up the woods you wont get anything else. All the guide lines are in the contract.      good luck

Hey neighbor, call the Waldron or Mena office (I'm the ranger in Mena, ask to speak to me) and we can fix you up.  We offer some small sales and some salvage from time to time.  Most of our big sales are 5 million board feet and up, but my heart is still with the "little" guy.

Would like to thank all you fellows for your reply to my post. I have a LT40 woodmizer manual with a 28hp Kohler engine. bought new from woodmizer picked it up at the 25th aniversary celibration at Mt. Vernon Mo. I have a one man circular mill that takes a team to run instead of one. haven't ran it in a long time. decided to get a woodmizer to cut some lumber to build a new house with a new lady. I lost my wife of 36 years and she lost her husband of 30 years about 3 years ago and we have been together about 1 1/2 years. I am from Louisiana and she is from Arkansas.
