Rim & Drum for Stihl 028
« on: March 20, 2007, 10:12:51 pm »
I want to change my 028 from .325 x .063 gauge to .375 x .050 gauge because I have 3 other chainsaws with that size chain.

I bought a new drum & rim for my 029 which went bad before I could install it.
Will my drum & rim from my 029 fit my 028?

Before I try changing over the 028 I would like to have an idea if the drum & rim from my 029 will fit the 028.

I love the 028 but the 029 was the cheapest piece of $it I have ever owned. Stihl should be ashamed of their selves for building it.

TIA.
Jim

Take the 028 parts off (you need to anyway) and compare them with the 029 pieces using a vernier caliper.  Critical things are shaft size, depth of drum and circlip location, and inner diameter/depth of the drum which accepts clutch shoes.  Better yet, just see if the rim interchanges and go with the old drum (unless it's beat up)?

I love my old 028 super too, freshened it up with a NOS piston/cyl and bar/chain and it runs like new again........

The part numbers for .325 sprockets on the 028 and 029 are different. Bars and chains will interchange though.
