When do trees grow?
« on: February 05, 2007, 10:55:09 am »
I see the F/F members are doing a lot of crying  :'( about the weather were having. I like to see it 20 below, because the trees like to grow in this weather ( i think). Was going to do a experiment to see when they grow, but thought it would be easier to just ask here. Thank you.

No thanks, been working to hard on a top secret barrel stove, 8) if it works out will share it with F/F. Here is the tree experiment, may be some one will try it.

1)Find popple tree 10"-20"(DCH) wrap ele. tape around it.(in Canada use duct tape) :)
2)Drill 1/4" hole 1" deep put wooden pin in it.
3)Tie a piece of fine wire to pin--put a small wire spring on pin too. Run wire around tree tie on to spring.
4)Mark the spot where spring and wire meet. Check twice a mo. for a year and see when it moves.

I think it would move different on different kinds of trees. On popple it would move at 20 below when all of its water pipes (cells) would swell up and brake. The place between bark and wood would swell the most and next summmmer will  turn into wood. I'm i a red green red neck or what. :) :)

Reminds me of the experiment when one feller climbs the ladder with a cup full of water and places the rim to the ceiling. The guy below takes a broom handle and places it on the bottom of the cup to hold it in place. The guy on the ladder lets go and comes down the latter.   laugh_at ::) ;D ;)

he must have better luck than I do then, only about half of em grow when I plant em :D  :D ;D
the other half gets ate by deer, rabbits and or some sort of big lawn mowing device driven by one of the family (lord knows I haven't run them ALL over ;) )

Here's a test pretty much like that tree growing test.
Hang a ladder, with 1' rungs, off of the side of a ship such that it touchs the water at low tide.
Wait until the tide has risen to full and then measure how many rungs of the ladder have submerged to give you the number of feet of the tide.

Look in Oliver's and Larson's Forest Stand Dynamics, Chapter 3.  It varies with the species.
