What are thoose bushes in Pine trees?

Well I have been trying for awhile to figure this out. So I hope it gets answered here. My luck has not been so good else where. :(

As you walk through a pine forest and look up near the top of a few trees. It looks like the tree has a bush growing out the side of it.

What is that called?

Is there a Native American term for it?

Thanks again

It sounds like mistletoe.

Is the description of mistletoe at this link anything like what you are seeing?

Hey there Goose.  Glad to have some more of you ladies join up.  Did I read right?  Are you in Colorado?  Down here in Fl. Mistletoe doesn't grow in conifers so I'm really interested in y'all figurin' this thing out.

Welcome to the Forestry Forum. :)

Well I know mistletoe looks more green and leafy.
I did not know it was such a parasite. Learning something new thanks.

I guess the bushes I am talking about look like the host tree itself, but are darker and extremely dense. The tree continues to grow strait up like nothing is different. Some times they are closer to the ground, but they do stick out like a 4 foot round bush. I have seen them a lot here in Colorado, and all over the western US. I have seen them in pictures all over the world. I know the should have some name hopefully many.

Dwarf Mistletoe, You can find it in all the conifers in the west.  It causes "brooming" where in infection is or was.  The branches will be much fatter with an infection.  The plant itself is only about a two inch hair with seedpod on the end.  I have a picture around here somewhere on the site.

You have some great mountains! I'm spent some time with the USFS on the White River and Arapaho National Forests; Vail, Avon, Dillon, Frisco, Minturn etc.

They are really built up now.

Goose,

Soulds like Tillaway has your critter nailed.  Hardwoods have clusters of twigs sometimes called 'witches brooms'.

Welcome to the forum.

When I was too young to work much but old enough to really enjoy the outdoors,  My Grandad had sawmills in the Rosevelt National Forest up Pouder Canyon from Fort Collins.  Dad helped him some and I really loved it. I've been back since and was sorry to see something had killed a lot of the trees up the canyon.  Still pretty though.

I have seen the brooming take up most of the crown in fact it is common in some areas.  Individual brooms and be quite large, like fill the back of a pickup large.

Well Thanks a bunch  :D

I did a search and found some pictures and Yup that's what I was looking for. I was hoping for a cooler name. I am trying to get some names for a children's book. Maybe I can find a Native American term for it that sounds better than brooming.

I love our Mountains. I went up the Prouder Canyon last year for the first time. We had to get Logs at Colorado State park.
This year we are going to some Burned Trees from the Haymen Fire of last year. My uncle has 5 acres of burnt trees. The fire passed over his property 3 different times and lists a severe burn area. My other uncle has 40 acres in Westcliff CO. I just got to get down there.

Goose   Mistletoe ( :-*) has that other dark side (its a parasite) that some don't know about. Why not just tell the children like it is, so they grow up knowing what "brooming" is in the top of pine trees ???  If not, they lose the ability to communicate with us old guys (now wouldn't that be something new! :D).
Reminds me of reading "modern" stories to my grandkids, and wondering where some of this information comes from. ;D

I ahve grown up calling those "whitches brooms".

With the infestation of spruce bark beetle my way I am always running into them when I am clearing the dead trees.  They are desireable for a bon fire since they really burn really good.

I have never seen them in any other species besides Spruce, but we only have two types of trees here anyway so it's no surprise.
Here's to making sawdust.

Here is a pic of a whitches broom that was pulled out of a tree in Squirrel Creek Alaska, just outside of Glennelan.
