I think that you found a diamond in the rough!  I am not sure if they make them anymore, but I don't think so.

If it's well insulated that stove will heat the camp just fine. ;D

The insurance may want to see a heat shield behind the stove. ;)

Nice camp!  :)

SD, i don't think i'll need a heat shield has i'm 53" away from the wall, i'm only required to have 48" but if the stove was CSA approved i would only need 36". We'll see come Friday when the inspector comes out!  8)

Beautiful, WDH- can I ask what type of finish is on your stone?  We are soon to install a wood burning stove (from Lowes and a lot like yours) and we'll need to build a fire resistant wall of something.  I have a pile of stones similar in appearance to yours but dull looking without a coating of some kind- used it on the floor and fireplace of my own house and we love it.  Polyurethane on the floor looks great and is very durable but I would worry with it behind the stove- melting, oxidation, catching on fire?

Lj,

To make a foundation for the stove, I cut off the floor joists and framed the opening.  Then I dropped down through the crawlspace and dug a footing.  Poured the footing with concrete and hired a mason to lay cement bloc up to the bottom of the joists.  Then, filled the blocked in hole with red clay and really packed it down.  Then poured a 5" concrete slab over the whole works to subfloor height.  The walls of the "L" were then bricked by the mason to within 1 1/2" of the ceiling to leave an air space.  Along each side is a vertical air vent about 2" wide that goes from near the floor to the top of the wall.  Along the bottom of each wall are air ports about 3" x 3".  Then the brick walls are covered in stone veneer, in this case "Smokey Mountain Gray".  Before the stone veneer is applied, screen wire was placed over the air vents and ports in the brick.  Well, that is a lot more than you asked for, but I knew that you would appreciate the significant "over-engineering"!  A tornado could take the house away, but that stove would still be standing there.

Another part of the story is that I could not get homeowner's insurance when I built the house because we live 1/2 mile from the county road way back in the woods way out in the country.  That was enough of a deterrent to the Insurance companies without having a wood stove to boot.  When I finally got an independent agent willing to consider it, the construction of the stove area with the air space behind a brick wall with air ports on a dedicated concrete slab sealed the deal.  I have now been with that agent for 30 years and he is a friend by now.

There is no finish to the stone.  That is just the way it looks natural.

sbishop, I have been following your progress and enjoying every post.  No question, my next project will be a Log Cabin Bunkhouse.  Here I am planning and I have not completed the one that I am working on.   ;D

Wife bought me this sign about 4 years ago to put up at the camp....well i finally put it up yesterday with the help of my son Hunter.

He also helped me stack some wood so when we come up at Christmas*...we can keep warm!!!

I winterized it today as deer season starts tomorrow and i won't be back till sometime in December. It was around 15c, it sure felt weird draining the water out of the camp and it so beautiful out!  :D

BT,

I hunt about an hour from there...about 1/3 closer to home. My godparents live about 15min away from my stand...so i usually crash there since we are in the stands before dailight and get out when its dark!

Not too many deer around the camp but lots of moose and millions of bears  :D..there is some deer but not plentiful...but the deer population in NB is not that great these days...but 7-8 years it was. The last 3 winters has been hard on them!

Hi guys,

Opening up the camp this weekend! I will be bleaching the dormers this weekend in preperation to have them finished by the end of june. Is it ok for the bleach to hit the meta roof? it will be a mixture of 50/50 water and bleach.

This year, the plan is to finish the cabin 100%. exterior will be complete by end of June. upstairs railing and finish the floor on the lower level....that will do it!

Thanks
Sbishop

I'd suggest testing a small area for any effect. Could "bleach" the coating.

What kind of paint is on your metal roof?  If it is a Kynar type paint I doubt it will hurt it. You may find that it brightens the paint slightly by removing haze and oxidation leaving a slight color difference.  I would not expect it to "bleach" the paint.   Forgive me if you have already stated what kind of paint it is.  I did not take the time to read through all 9 pages of this thread.  You may want to start a new thread on this topic with just the specifics.  Nice cabin!  I dream of going to NB someday and fishing for sea run Brookies.  I have a special place reserved on my wall for that future trophy.
