Skidder value
« on: December 31, 2002, 07:41:05 pm »
Can someone give me a ball park figure on what a 380b Timberjack with good rubber and in fair shape as far as appearance is worth? I haven't heard it run yet. Doesn't look like a detroit diesel. Has a grapple and winch. A logger just took off with a lot of timber and I mean a lot and didn't pay the farmer.left the skidder told the farmer to sell it.
Iv'e run an old 230 for 10 yrs and I'm looking to get something like this. the farmer has a price in mind that sounds cheap but I thought I would ask to see what some of you guys that run 380s could tell me.

If you surf the net and type in Log Skidders For Sale, you may find sites with a 380B.  One site that has a lot of skidders is www.point2point.com.

Good luck

I had thougt about a banker or loan Co . If this guy was crooked enough to walk away with thousands of dollers worth of timber why not use someone else's skidder and forget about it when your done. I hate people like this it gives the rest of us that are doing it right a bad name!

Yes, if the logger let it behind, check ownership and for any leins on the skidder. Check that it wasn't leased or rented from some other owner or equipment company.

A farmer ended up with one like that for awhile in a trespass case I worked on until the "real" owner came forward. I also know of one removed from a job in the middle of the night by the "Repo Man".

I know a logger (term used loosely) from around here that went out and stole a skidder one night, painted it, then went to work with it. He worked with it for over a month before getting "Caught up with".

The Skidder was valued at 30,000 dollars. I guess crooks are stupid. Would it not have been smarter just to steal 30,000 dollars and vacation for a month, then to steal the skidder and work your fanny off to try to earn a buck? He would have wound up in the same place regardless.

Would that be like trying to hide a elephant in a strayberry patch by painting it's toenails red?

What year is the skidder?  Does this "logger" know that some day that farmer is going to run into him at the gas station and pummel him?  All this for a few logs....

Don't know the year but I guess from what I see at lyons equipment the 380Bs were made around 88-90or so

I suggest getting the oil sampled and dropping all of the fluids to see what kind of maintainence this hacker did.  Make sure everything takes grease and run the machine for a couple hours if possible.  I've sampled oil and found trace amounts of coolant before, suggesting a bad head gasket.  Oh well, just a thought.  I have a TJ skidder, and USUALLY the first 2 numbers in the SN are the year.  Good Luck!

In the Nov. 02 Southern Loggin' Times page 53, there is a 1993 380C for sale @ River Falls Machinery, www.heavy-stuff.com, with a recon motor and trans, new 28Lx26 tires for $34,000. I thought this might be of some help.  Lang

I saw you mentioning Southern Loggin Times (http://www.southernloggintimes.com) but what about Timber Harvesting (http://www.timberharvesting.com) if you haven't checked it out—you might enjoy it.

I believe the first thing I would do is ask the farmer for the loggers name and phone number. If the logger truly did abandon it, he really wont have anything to lose telling you all about it. It would also be a good idea just in case theres an entire nother side to this story.

I would first check with the local cops to check to see if it was stolen. What color is the machine is it orange or green.Because i bought a green 1995 model last and paid $20,500 and it had new tires and hoses and reman engine.

Wow how time flys I had to go back and read my origanal post 51/2 yrs ago. Since this was brought up I'll update it. That machine was bought out from under me. The guy that bought it only cleared a couple lots and rented it out once then it just sat. Two years ago I bought it from him. I can't believe how bad someone can abuse a machine using it so little. I paid 10,500 for it and put at least another 8g in parts. I have gotten some work out it but it now needs a rear main seal in the moter so I guess I'll be pulling the moter soon. I guess I could have bought a better machine for what I got in it but I know what I got now I been through everything.

I sold my 450 b for 8500. It needed some work to be done to it. But i was running it every day. I got good at pulling the motor in it. It had the detroit. We could pull it out and have it back in a day. And that was pulling the head and knocking out the sleaves and pistons. Then putting it all back together.
