Tom and Jeff's trip to the UP after the Piggy Roast
« on: August 10, 2006, 04:58:11 pm »
Jeff and I took off to the cabin and had the intentions of relaxing.  Sleeping late, eating too much and doing some touristing seemed like a good way to spend a few days.  We had a great time and had fun in some restaurants but got cut short with a contrary truck.

This thread will record some of our adventures as we get to them.

We went North, across the "Mac" and East to the cabin.  It's located in the "suburbs" of Detour Village, Mi. which is on the far east end of the UP right across from Drummond Island.

Along with some trips down local two track roads, we went west on the lake road to Grand Marais, South to Munising, and back East again to the cabin.  It's a lo-o-ng day trip.

Here's a picture of Jeff looking out over Lake Superior
at a lookout station on top of Cemetery Hill in Brimley.
It is what it is named.  An Indian Cemetery is located on
top of the hill and we experienced a military funeral while
we were there.

We left and headed west again to find a logging operation
on the side of the road where we got pictures of a forwarder
at work.  Yep! we waved and he waved back.  ;D

A bit further down the same road, we passed a 58 wheel
log truck that was kicking up impenetrable dust.  I imagine
the driver was questioning why someone would stick a
camera out of the window and point it backward at him.

No, I didn't.   Lou was the one that Tammy had come look for us.  He spoke with Jeff but I was across the yard at the cabin and in the truck.  He left after the conversation.  We didn't go to their house.   His wife was a little under the weather due to a recent surgery.  Matter of fact, Lou had just brought her from the hospital when he came looking for us.

I'll save that for another day. :)

Here are a couple more photos taken from Mission Hill looking out over Lake Superior and over to Canada.

I zoomed up on the first photo so you could see what is all along the bluff in the first photo.

Here is a photo of Tom examining the rudder from the M.M. Drake at Whitefish point.

That unique something overhead in Dogpatch used to be on a timer and so it would come to life every few minutes and run through a cycle.  Haven't seen it do that in a long time though.  Didya go down the Logslide ???

Looking east towards Grand Marais and the Grand Sable Banks from the Logslide

Looking west towards the Au Sable Point Lighthouse

This is the sight of the wooden slide where logs were slid into the lake to be rafted to mills in Grand Marais.  It was a dry slide and men were stationed along it with shovels to put out the fires caused by the friction of the sliding logs.  Unfortunately no pics of it exist or have been discovered.  A trip to Grand Marias isn't complete without a trip to the Logslide overlook.  The park service discourages climbing the dune but people still do it.  It only takes a couple minutes to get to the bottom but coming back up is a whole different story

Didya go down it ??? ;D  Was the Lakeshore rd open all the way through or didya have to go back into Grand Marais and go south to the Adams Trail to get to Munising?  Either way you drove past the cabin or the driveway anyway :)

The Adam's Trail is about ten miles south of Grand Marais on M-77 and takes you right into downtown Munising past the paper mill.

The road we took was a gravel road off of the lakeshore road that turned into a one lane forest road, probably orv or snow mobile I guess. We were a long time getting to munising.

Here are a couple pictures to start from Pictured Rocks and the Munising area.

I uploaded a full size version of the first photo in case someone would like to have it. It makes a great desktop wallpaper. Its a very big file though...
