Merry Christmas to all you over the water.....
« on: December 24, 2002, 05:25:09 am »
Just like to wish all you guys and gals out over the big pond a very merry christmas and a happy new year from me over here in england...  :)

May you all have a wonderful time with your family and friends during the coming holidays....

PS - I've just been looking on the CIA website, comparing the size of GB with some of your states.... it seems that my little country will fit into Oregon quite comfortably - what with only approx 10% of GB being under forest - that 'aint very many trees for us to play with compared to wot you guys have.... :(

it's STIHL wet here......

Jeff,

Ya need to read all the posts-----Andy explained that once.  You could go to his profile and read his past posts and then you would be as smart as the rest of us,  at least in that respectl

Corley,  Yes they have a 4th of july,  they just don't celebrate it.

Andy,

Hope you as well as everyone else has a Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas Andy,
I guess it's already Christmas in G.B. but still the 24th
here in the states.  :)

Corley 5,

The 4th of July is when the Brits
sit around in the pubs and commiserate about losing
control of all of us over here in the colonies.
They do have a day when they set off fireworks though.
I think it's called Guy Fawkes day.  ;D

Noble,
Way to go man, you scooped our admin.
Keep it up and he will have to give you root.  :o

Noble,

Okay, since Jeff wants me to give you a lesson
in Geek Mythology (get it).  Guys like Jeff and I
who administer Unix servers are Geeks.  Unix
is an operating system for computers, Like Windows
98 or Windows 2000. and was invented by some mentally derranged folks at Bell labs.  It was invented so people
like me can have jobs.  Otherwise we would be unemployable
geeks and have to stand in bread lines. ::)

That's  why Becky has a tee-shirt that says I love my Geek.
You can get all sorts of goodies at thinkgeek.com
Now for the root part of the story. The built-in user
account on a Unix operating system is called root.
If you have root, you are all powerful, god like and
people will bow before you and kiss your feet and
buy you nice Christmas presents like CAT log skidders
etc.  Sometimes if the people who have root privileges
are really annoyed, they can do things like totally
blow away user accounts. You know, Casper felt
the results of root wrath.   So, you must stroke
folks with root privileges gently, don't rub their fur
the wrong way or they can make life miserable for you.
They are so powerful they can even make TOM become
EBENEIZER.
Anyway, if you "got root?" there is nothing more in life
that you could want for except an LT70 sawmill. ;D

Signed,
Whitepe

Yep - your right about the 4th of july - we don't celebrate it  8)

we do have the Guy Fawkes night - thats the 5th November - also known as 'bonfire night' - we treat it more like you folks treat Halloween - an excuse to light big fires, roast jacket potatoes, drink beer and light lots of fireworks.... trick ot treat seems to be catching on over here in a big way over the last few years... some say thats a bad thing....

I'm at work at the moment doing a 12hr night shift in the biochemistry lab...  had a rather large Christmas* lunch with my folks, before I came in to the lab - much food and merryment all round - hope you all had as good a time as I had ... CHEERS ALL..... ;) ;)

I had to Noble,
When Jeff says jump, I ask how high on the way up.
He's got root remember.  Anyway, I didn't have
anything else to do being snowed in where I am.
I can't put any Smileys in this right now. It doesn't
seem to be working. ???

Excuse me... ;)

It certainly is working. YOUR BORROWED COMPUTER MAY NOT BE WORKING, but as for the forum? I am at the root of any problem.

Hey wait, that didn't come out right. :)

AMF,

I think the origin of the term bonfire actually came
from druid times and is short for bone fire. As I understand it people were actually burned and after the fire went out they
read the bone patterns to predict the future. Sounds eerie
doesn't it.  :o

P.S. How far are you from Birmingham?

Sorry Jeff,
I didn't mean the forum smileys weren't working. You
are right. It is this borrowed computer with version 0.01
of AOL that has almost no disk space left and is
slower than a CAT tractor in creeper gear. I rebooted
it and the smileys came back. I did remember the
three ? smiley one though which is how I got that one in.
:'(
Besides, only 29 more.  ;)

Wow - Whitepe.... never knew that.... next November 5 I shall impress my mates with the 'Bonefire' bit of knowledge.. ta.

Birmingham is only about 30 odd miles from me.. total git to get to though, the motorway is always bumper to bumper with traffic unless it's 4 in the morning. Not somewhere I choose to go to unless I have a very good reason. I live in a very rural area in Shropshire - 30 miles down the road is a different planet where aliens live!  :o
