saw rpm?
« on: April 12, 2006, 10:22:48 pm »
I have an husky 359 i was adjusting the  hi speed with the techometer  it sounded  better around 12700 instead of 13500

I also have a dual port muffler would this affect the speed?

I believe you are alot closer to the stock rpm'swith the 12700 cause I know for my area they call for 12500 rpms stock, my ported 359's run around 13800 to 14200  so 13500 on a stock porting would be to high in my books

The  359  manual  specs says 13500 hi speed, so you think i should run higher 14000 would this not kill the  cylinder over time to fast for engine design?

no I said you should turn lower, my ported 359's are higher but they are ported , I found around 13000 rpms on a stock 359 worked better and gave you more torque , most of the 359's are to lean to suit me so I make the carb adjustable and set them alittle richer

stock 359s im my area will tolerate 13500 plus rpm for a short while, but will eventually blow the piston ring retaining pin through the top of the piston. after that its gets a little messy.
we try to keep them below 13500 .
but with the dumbheads here with 15 inch bars and dull 325 chains those poor saws dont stand much of a chance.
they just scream all the time.
im curious now do most of you run the 72 or 73 chain or do you use the 325 chain.
the stickers on the saws spec the 72 chain but they arrive to us with the 325 rim sprocket installed .
i have switched a few over for customers and they are happy .
i think they have enough power for the large chain.

I run 73 full skip chain works great, is there any real difference in .325 vs 3/8

When I sold Husky, the 359 came in with 3/8 rims and the 73LP  worked well. It would probably scream with 95VP. However, for some reason, we got 55 Ranchers with .325 rims and 3/8 bars, we switched to 3/8 rims.

all 359's here come with 3/8's chain on them , most come with a 20 inch bar which is kind of big for our area , a 16 inch or 18 inch bar is better . I have ran alot of 359's both stock a modded and I find the stock 359 is ok cutting smaller softer wood but when you start cutting bigger maple and beech it is to lean with the carb set as rich as it can go on the carb limiter caps and you could blow the motor up real easy but if you grind the little ear off the cap so you can set the high speed jet alittle richer they work fine

here is the tip of the day folks...
when you need to adjust the carb on a "locked carb",you dont have to grind, alter or otherwise mess with the locks.
you just use a flat blade screwdriver and move the lock about 1/16 inch off the needle.
now it is unlocked, you can use a smaller screwdriver "we made 1 from a normal carb adjustment screwdriver "
its 1/2 as narrow.
the NEW screwdriver will fit through the middle of the lock and you can adjust the needle directly.
when finished simply push the lock back on and nobody will know you were there.
