Chain type for bow bar
« on: March 26, 2006, 10:53:48 am »
I'm planning on buying the 16" bow bar from Baileys and running it on my Stihl 046 Magnum with the dual port muffler. Any suggestions as to which type of chain I should get? Full chisel, semi chisel, round cut? I'll be using the bow bar to buck quite a bit of white pine and the occaionsal hardwood.

I've got the 60" LogRite Peavy hook so I can roll the bigger logs to keep out of the dirt but there will still be some on them from sitting on the ground for a while (storm damage - stupid pine trees fall over all the time).

My other question is should I use my 24" straight bar or the 16" bow bar for bucking a 4' diameter oak tree into firewood length sections?

Thanks all!

The round top (chipper) chain will be more forgiving in dirty wood so might be a good choice.  The chisel is generally faster and most common in this area. It is the way to go in frozen wood which may not be an issue for you.

A 4' diameter log is a bit big for a Bow.  Your best bet on a log that size is the bar.

There are recommended maximum log sizes for most Bows.  I just don't know what they are.  :)

As tempting as it may be, don't remove the guards and don't use the part of the bow between the the sawhead and the spur for a bar.  Only use the Bow as a Bow.

I've read all that y'all have posted about bow bars and I will definently follow these guidelines. I like my legs and arms. :)
