Dan,
After considerable cogitating, I just wanted you to know that I've solved the bark question.  The one with the thin bark is an Alpine.  Some Al's don't do well in the open and you only find them residing in protective areas.  This tends to cause a thin skin.  Those that are forced to come out in the open where there is sunshine develop a rather ineffective protective coating that, when removed, exposes a gorey interior.   ::)  ;D
