The leaves on live ailanthus are just coming out in my little corner of the valley.
but it looks like every one treated with garlon is dead. I still have a bunch to go and the stilt grass too. I am heading back up in 2 weeks. I'll update then.

Keep fighting the good fight.

I will be using my cash prizes from the Hoosier Heartland RC&D Forestry and Tom Wallace Farm Forestry awards to purchase a quantitiy of Garlon - that stuff ain't cheap!  Once I have the necessary weapons in hand I will be attacking the ailanthus, autumn olive and spice bush on my property.  Luckily I have not spotted any stilt grass.

Just another reason to spend quality time in the woods  8)

My two cents based on experience and advice w/ailanthus.

1) girdling or cutting down tree will produce HUGE number of sprouts - dont!!!!!!!!!
2) smaller shoots and trees can be killed with any retail brush killer by spraying on leaves
3) trees can be killed via hack and squirt
4) I have used pathfinder II, also arsenal does a good job
5) To prevent suckering/sprouting, dont hack a complete circle
6) Best time for hack-n-squirt is during mid summer (june to august)

I  am having good results with pathfinder, some trees may be stubborn & require second treatment. Very few problems with re-sprouting.
