05 Chevy 2500hd
« on: January 30, 2006, 03:25:50 pm »
Anyone own a 2500hd? I have one and get between 7-9 miles to the gal.? My friends that have them all get better mpg. I went to the dealer and they said yup trucks fine thats what your going to get. I would think it would get better than that considering twenty years ago thats what they got? Any suggestions on getting better mpg such as a truck computer reprogramer?

Husky,

   I've got a 03 Chevy, 2500 HD, 4x4, with 4.11 (?) rear ends. I get 11-12mpg. I thought that was bad! :o

I have a '02 2500HD with the 8100 engine and the Allison trans. I got 145,000 on it and I get about 12 or 13 when I keep my foot out of it. It seems that my mileage is the same weather I pull my trailer or not, loaded or empty. Then the other thing is I only have a 24 gal. tank......don't leave much space between gas stations. I have 4:11 rearends too...and 4X4........It seems your mileage should be a little better than that. I put a different air cleaner on mine....That seemed to help her breathe a little better, but didn't do much for mileage. I never tried to reprogram it..... :-\ :-\ :-\

Yup I got 4:11 rear end too.  I have a 36 gal. tank so I can probably go as far as you can before filling up. I am looking into an on board computer to get better mpg but who knows ???

My Dad and Brother have the Duramax in the 3/4 ton and they are getting around 19-20 pulling a trailer or not.

I have a 93 1/2 ton suburban with 500,000 miles on it 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) and I have an aftermarket chip and I get 15 with my foot in it (ask Buzz ;D ), or 17-18 mpg if I stick to the speed limit.

I have an 02 chevy 2500HD 4x4 Silverado with extended cab and short box. I had almost the same exact truck in a 2000 1500.  The 2500 has the b000 engine and the 1500 had a 350. I took a trip across the country to Vancouver, BC and back with that truck and averaged just over 20 mpg for the whole trip. I have taken several trips to Ocean City, NJ with the 2002 and the best I can get is just under 15 mpg. To me the key difference is in gearing of the rear end. You can get a 3.73 rear end in the 1500 models but you can only buy the 2500 model with a 4.11 rear end. I bitched at GM about not offering the 3.73 gears but they don't listen. All they think about is payload. Most trucks I see like mine are running around empty, mine included. Only occasionally are they loaded up. If my present truck had a load on it and 3.73 gears I would just use the tow haul mode and drop the tranny into regular drive instead of overdrive. Both vehicles have tachometers and the difference is quite evident. At 60 mph I would be revving about 1750 or less with the 1500 and would be revving about 2100 or more with the 2500HD.

Some of you may doubt my mileage figures but I might add that I do very limited city driving and I drive very conservatively. I anticipate stops and accelerate slowly. I try to keep the rpms under 2000 with the 2500 HD which means I set the cruise at 55mph. Like I said the key is the gearing. Drop the rpm's and your mileage will improve.

Here is another of my 2 cents worth shots:  ;D As all the mechanics who read this know, it takes so much fuel to make so much power to move so much weight. The proper balance will always be a combination of gearing, weight, speed, and friction. I have heard of the magical carburators that make an astonishing 80mpg  :D and have yet to seen one proven. Deeper into it, a percect fuel mixture of 15 parts air / 1 part fuel (give or take a point or 2 depending on engine, ect), leads to a fuel burn of .4 pounds of fuel per hp per hour, if I remember correctly. So the key remains what you are moving down the highway and the power it takes to move it. I stayed away from diesels for a long time because I hate the noise and maintenance issues (even after diving OTR rigs for a few years) but now, due to the size of equipment we move in our business, I had to get with it or suffer 8 mpg in my hemi powered Dodge.  Oh yeah, diesels reach a better fuel economy simply due to the compression and amount of fuel needed to make the machinery turn.  :P

Cowboy Bob has the 05 2500hd with the Allison tranny.  He pulls the livestock gooseneck trailer five days a week with it, and he gets somewhere between 12 and 15 mpg.  On our Sawlex trip, he got 21 mpg.  I can't believe a dealership would say 7 to 9 is normal.

The reason that you can't get  the gear ratio you want is the EPA certification .

every combination has to be tested ,as a seperate test , and at a lot of expense .  Hech before the EPA you could get five or six different engines and a choise of three or four transmissions  and maybe six gear ratios.

My ford f-250 diesel 7.3 diesel gets 21 mpg loaded or empty with 3.55 rear .  Had a ford 460 gas jobby once with 4.11 rear and I got 5 mpg ,it was a 1 ton and new and I felt sick to my stomach the day after I drove it off the lot .  A new peterbilt with 550hp cat motor and 3.36 rears can almost get 5 mpg fully loaded . Sorry to hear about your fuel problem . I drove a cummins diesel for a month for a owner operator and it was a kenworth and he told me dont drive this motor like a cat diesel or its going to take twice the fuel so I had to go lightly on the pedal and watch the fuel pressure .  I know all this might not help but for 50$ I could pull into a non-certified shop and give them the "cattle haulers code" and fifteen minutes I would be in and out of the shop and all he did was type in and change the code and instantly gave me a extra 75 horse.  I suppose your dealer is afraid to change the code if there is such a thing on a gas pickup ?  I had once drove a truck called "the grenade" as it had 300 horse stock but changed the code and it was doing a good 425 hp . Hope you find the problem. I wonder if 33" swamp tires would would atleast lower your rpm . I dont know ,just rattling on now .

Hey Kirk, what kind of chip did you put in your 93 suburban, and how of a mileage increase did you get? I've got a 93 also, and it only gets 11-12 mpg.  I was hoping when I bought it that it would get 15 at least.  This is my wife's rig and it's up and down the road alot, gets pretty expensive.  I've also got a 97 dodge 3500 cummins 4x4 I get 18- 21 mpg with that, it's got 235,000 on it, really been a good rig. I love the cummins.  I'm wondering about the feasibility of the diesels in the new pickups though, with fuel being $2.50 a gallon and the diesel option costing another $7000 I would think the diesel pickups wouldn't be selling very well.

Iain,
We like to support our gov't, the less milage we get the more taxes they make from each gallon we burn.   :D :D :D

It's a ford, and we use the origianal full length Queens miles over here,
what do you need those big liters for anyway?
