under water stumps how can i cut them chainsaw or circular

All I can think of at this time would be a hand saw and a wet suit.
It will be cheap and dry.

Seeing as the word "gator" appears in your screen name, I'm betting ya can't do what we do.

We wait till February and drag a big frame standing on the ice over them and winch them up & out. Then we drag 'em to shore with a tractor to dry and be burned.

Got rid of a bunch of roacks in a shallow bay that way for a buddy too, 'cept we dragged out to a real deep spot and waited for spring ta' drop in a deeper spot for us.

let me explaine some more  ive built a chain saw that runs off of a vertical shaft 8 hp briggs its chain diven with a 2in sprocket on the shaft end and a 4in on the motor the shaft is 7/8 and goes through a 2in pipe with bearings on each endthe pipe is app 5ft long. ithas a plate weldeded to the bottom thats ben squared in a lathe the shaft sticks through to put a chain saw sprocket on the bar bolts to the plate and i tighten the chain by hand and tighten the bar bolts the bar is 28in and the chain is a 404  ioil the chain by pouring oil onit while its out of the water shen its in the water i think the water would be the lub for the chain its mounted on a pontune barge i use a troling motor to push the chain saw through the stump. i welded a pice of 1in sq tubing app 18in long and 90 deg to the bar for a stop to hold the stump against  the bar

that doesnt work it just sits their and kindi naws at the stump then the chain gets loose and jumps off i put a chain catcher on it to save the chain and that works some one said more hp and chain speed . any advise would be very apparachied       mygator

I would opt for vegetable oil out of the water, .404 might be a little large for the task, carbide chain might be a better choice because of the dirt but it's more expensive, is there an adjustable chain adjuster because something has to lock the bar in place other than bar nuts.
An additional pipe with a lever into the bottom might apply more pressure to the stump than your trolling motor if the depths aren't too great.

Another idea would be to drop a pipe down with a pulley on the bottom where you could winch the saw into the stump by using a shackle/U clamp on the bar nose attached to a rope that would fasten to the other end of the saw.
The pipe holding the pulley could be sunk into the bottom and the saw could be winched ahead from the boat.

There are two chainsaws commercially available for working underwater.

One is Pneumatic the "Timberking", with an underwater air-diverter kit installed.



The other is hydraulic by Stanley, the large Model CS11.


Stanley CS11

The Stanley I know can be rent from some Stanley Hydraulic Dealers.

You would also require a compressor capable of 90 PSI at 100 CFM to run the Pneumatic saw and a Hydraulic power unit of 10-14 gpm at 1500-2000 psi for the CS11.

To purchase either Saws cost over $2,000.00 without bar and chain, powersupply or compressor.

the  stanley saw is to pricey for me ive seen stanley saws on ebay but cant think of a way to bolt it to a shaft to hold it under water.                                                                                                                                                            the water is to deep for a winch on the bottom . i need a ajustable bar lock but dont know how to make it work.imthinking of drilling and tappping a hole for a olier and a hose and tank mounted out of the water . ive got a 16hp briggs with a 8in chain sprocket to mount on it that should gave all the chain speed i need? but its so heavey that i cant handel it. ive had lung cancer surgery they removed my collar bone and 2 or3 ribs , i picked that motor up and did sever damage to all my musles and tendens 3 mount ago and still having llots of problems, that dang motor weighs in at110lbs . anyway i got a hyd. lift to handle it now.ive ben thinking of hydrulics but cant find a saw sprocket that will fit a keyed shaft.and cant find a hyd motor with a spine shaft.but it would still have the same problem with locking the bar.the sprocket thats on their now i had a key way cut in it but they haft to get it super red hot to cut it and ther goes my case harding.so it wont last very long .ill try to get some pic today and try to figer out how to get thek in here,              thanks a lot i really need all the help i can get mygator

You can Rent a Stanley hydraulic saw and power supply.

They are not that expensive to rent.

 You say you have .404 chain. Is it .063 ?? You can buy the keyed chain sprocket from Baileys or Carl Neutzel. It is from a ''Harvester''. I used one for building a ''Slabber'' set-up for my Swing Blade Mill. Mine is a 13 tooth size I think. Check Baileys-online.com and look under Harvesters. They will show a photo if you look hard enough.

  Where ya live ?? How big are the stumps and how long has the water been over them ??  Got a few ideas, since we have recovered a LOT of submerged Logs.

i cant rember for sure semes like it was in the  early 70 s  the lake is lake fork in east texas its managed by the sabine river athurithy and they are a ------------ to work withthey wont allow you to pull stumps cause it causes wholes in the bottom of the lake mut you can cut them and they are super hard almost puterfied like rocks      thanks for the info about the sprockets ill check them out

     i want to cut the stumps so my boat wont hit them and tear up mymotor i want to cut for other people arount the lake also         most of the stumps are oak and cedar with a few others micked in. i found those sprockets at baileys thanks a bunch. ive got some pictures of my saw but ant figered out how to get them here ill work on it to night  maybe some one could tell me how to do it.cause i ant got a clue. ther ort to be ssome directions around here.                               when all ealse fails read the dang directions

    a buddey of mine said to get a snorlel with a long air hose and he would suppely all the gas i wanted and use a bow saw

The stumps wouldn't be too deep for using a winch system if you're hitting them with the motor.

  the sabine river aurthey wont allow anything that will disturb the natural bottom of the lake i wanted to get a  dozer and a long cable  to wrap around a bunch of them well they said no--------- way and its ther way or the highway. and that it..... so im trying to figur out how to cut themthats my only opection                                                                                                                                                               i dont know how to transfer files and folders   this dang puter is kicking my-------- i think it need a good enima.////  i know their are some directions in this thing ill look some more.        i barley know how to turn it on..
