Got a new place and moving ...
« on: November 19, 2005, 08:53:54 pm »
Next summer that is . We are moving to the Eastern Townships  ;D  For those of you ... well that would almost be all of you , that dont know where that would be , its a 25 minute drive to Jay Peak vermont but on the Québec side  ;). Its a 250 acre farm with nice big barn ( 125 feet long X 45 feet wide ) and a smaller one that will become my new shop , 80 X 30 all of this at the end of the road , bordered by the Missiquoi river to the north and 1 mile of bush south is the US border . Closess neibourgh each way is a mile away .
The plan now is for me to saw up  a house , going to be a sawed dovetailed log home . All of the wood  needed to build this I plan on sawing drying and dressing . Thats this winters project , put it up in the spring and move it there next summer . The plan is to have a heated pad  , now aint to sure yet how it will be heated , wether it will be by water or electric sortof leaning with electric , need to be looked at a bit more .

Here is a pic of the barn , accessible from the parking area  , it is used at the moment as a garge to park cars .. and the machinerie .
Now I am waiting for things to freeze up and get a little snow on the ground and get just a little more time for my ribs and its off to the bush to  hurl down the pine .  ;D :D :)

Marcel. was the smaller building the milk house?  You sound as though you are going to have some great times, this Winter, preparing the materials for the new house.   What does the house look like that is on the site, at this time?

Looks to be a silo on the back side of the big barn. 8)  The silo ought to be good for something besides storing silage, but I can't think of anything. smiley_headscratch

I have seen some pretty nice homes made from a silo, like that in the background.  He could use it for a drying shed with an elevator.

Pigman  There is a silo .. and there is a use for it  at the  moment ... pigeon roost   >:(  going to take care of that in a short term  ;)
As for the house thats on there , it is a very good condition ... six bedroom farm house ... but I want a log home ... So I gonna build me one .  ;D
Frank the silo could still be used for grain .... I dont think that I would want to live in it ... Any ways there needs to be a place to put the feed for these guys

That's a really nice place Marcel.Does it have any timber on the property as a potential for a woodlot or is it mostly cleared?

Theres better part of 100acres of wood ...  mostly hardwood .. Cherry , yellow birch , sugar maple , white ash a few red oaks . very little pine but there is some helmlock and spruce ... 50 or so acres of pasture and the rest is good fields .
One reason for the draft horse is for loggin it for personal use . Dont want to bring the skidder there ... Its kinda steep for it and there is just to many little streams to cross ... There is a good bush road through the bush so loging it wont be to much trouble . Will have the tractor there to bring the logs down to the mill , once the horse brings them to the trail road  ;D

Very nice Marcel! I see yet another person who just can't have enough land... We are up to about 240 acres and having to add on this year or next.  8)

Nice looking Stallion too.

A little bit of work would slim down that mare a bunch. Our horses have such an easy life right now that we call them the vagabonds...

But visitors tend to give them a little workout - but not enough.

So, how did I end up here anyway?

The plan is for a two year construction span ... I will be happy to have the tin on by next fall and the windows in . Then take a few couple of weeks and go hunting , then attack the interior . We will be staying in the other house while this one is beeing put together .

crtreedude ... I dont plan on working that horse to much .. if I do I will have to go and get me some new cloth for myself .. and at the moment  I am quit found of my roundness  ;D
Norm ..  At the moment I dont really have any plans for the rest . It is beeing managed by one of the local farmers and he seams to be dooing a good job of it .. I am not saying that I would not like to do it myself , just wont have time for a few years to come .
We will have some chickens to run around and get in the way of things .. there is already a small lake for trout , wildlife is plentyful .

This place will be open house to any of you that would like to drop by .. no need to call as there will always be room for ya in the hay barn ...  ;D

That is a nice looking place and really nice looking horses.  Shoot, sell that skidder--you got all you need already and maybe another on the way (?).  Your QH will cross real nice on that mare for a great woods horse--bigger isn't necessarily better in tight quarters in the timber as long you have good heart.  I've often pondered crossing my mares with a foundation QH stud for a second team but unfortunately, you can buy good horses cheaper than build them in these parts.  Wish you were closer--I'd come skid with you for a crack at that trout pond.

Marcel that's a really nice farm.  I have probably seen it from the air - the last time I was up in the Newport/Derby VT area was in a Cessna twin and the view is spectacular.    I used to go up there a lot and roam around in Sherbrooke and Magog.   Only a mile from the border, you're on the east or west side of the Memphremagog?  Anyway, it's nice countryside up there, I wish my area still had large farms available to buy for a decent cost.  Right now one of my neighbors wants to sell 60 acres of stunted trees and rocks for a half-million dollars.  No pasture, no timber, and no buildings.  Oh well.   :(

Sorry I am so late to the forum, Marcel....your new place is really beautiful! Is it far from where you live now? I love your barn, is the smaller one in that good of condition also?
That is sure a pretty part of the country....beautiful view!

Congratulations!  8)

If I didn't have to milk these DanG cows,  you'd see me coming down the road. :)

bro  I was reading about the latest in milking.  You have an automatic setup in your barn, each cow has an electronic tag which triggers the appropriate amount of supplements when the cow enters the milking station.  The cups are placed and removed automatically, the milk is weighed and entered into the database from which the supplement allowance is calculated.  The cows are free to enter whenever they feel the need to be milked.  Some go for three times a day and others only once.  the number of milking stations depends on the number of cows, I'll see if I can dredge up the article, it was in some mag that I get from Europe.

Just shell out the bucks and you are freed from milking for ever. ;D ;D  It doesn't say anything about shed cleaning :( :( :(

Oh well. :(

Its on the west side of the Memphrémagog and my north border would be the Missisquoi river .  .. If you been up there , you must of seen the big cannon  that Dr Bull was testing  out up in the hills ... well that would be south east of me .

  Jeff ...
It truly is a nice place .

Pappy  that would be the south east to me  ;D

Modat ... the ssilo could be up for rent ... you could have a view to boot .. ;)

Patty ... Dont be sorry , no need to ... just come up and visite , I gots plenty of spare hammers . This place is 4 1/2 hours east of where I live now .
The smaller barn needs TLC  ;D   I dont know how old it is , I do know that it was built in three different steps or times ... each one with a different level on the floor , but the roof is nice and level and in good condition , the plan for this building is to renovate it from the ground up . Pour a new level floor and have 10 foot walls then put the roof back on . Should make a nice shop garage .  ;D ;)

Congratualtions, Marcel. That sure looks like a nice place to let your hair grow :)

 The beard too ..  ;D

The house will be going to the left of the small barn in the opening between trees ... they will be removed to make a bigger opening

This pic was taken facing north . the larger barn is to the left of where I was standing to take this pic ture . the main house is to the right .

Very nice looking place,  sir.       8)

You know you might get a shredder for your slabwood, grind it and blow it up in that silo and have your own bedding material for the horses!  ;)

Unbelievably beautiful.  Enjoy, I know I would.   I've got a few more years of suburbia before I make that leap.

DanG, I don't know how I missed this thread for so long !!    >:(

Marcel, c'est absolument beau !!! Vous êtes un homme fortuné effectivement.   8)

As for your radiant heat system, go with the PEX tubing and liquid heat, that way you can use anything, or een a combination of things for the heat source. I helped a friend do this at his place a few years back, now he can heat with wood, gas or electric, whichever is the best deal. Presently he heats with wood, and the electric kicks in if he's away or forgets to stoke the boiler.

Let's see know, that would be about a 4 flight from here, hmmmmmmm, looks like all kinds of places to land too.  ;)

I'll make sure that I have a hammock up and ready for you to try out tha silo on a sleep over . As for the pool , sorry but one heated pool is enough for me .

 Murf

I was leaning and still am towards electric in slab wiring  for heat ... There will be a wood cook stove and a small box type stove in the house .
There is a small aeroport not 2 miles east of this place .. It aint for any boings .. but there are small planes that land there .  If youu got a ultra light .. you can land it in the field in front of the house .
