lube and swing mills
« on: October 06, 2005, 08:31:25 am »
I may have missed something but looking back I can't find where anyone says they use any lube other than water when running their swing mills.  But when reading about lube for Bandmills there seems to be several different lubes out there and also some people add different things to the water.  Does anyone use anything other than water when running their swing blade mills.

Love the outdoors, chainsaws, my 300 win mag, my wife and my son but not exactly in that order.

Just a little dish soap to keep the algae away.  Only in the last tank of the day.  In the winter, if things are frozen, I usually go lubeless  :)

Water here also on the swinger.  I don't use lube on the bandmill in the winter either

LS,

here in Aus, every fill I squirt lemon based dish detergent into the water bottle. I also run the tap full open. Not sure if I need to have it full open, but having the detergent reduce's build up on the blade (something I notice heqaps when sharpening time comes, I remove all the buildup off the tooth before sharpening and using the above I hardly get any build up on the tooth now) and the lemon base helps with the tanic acid we have in our hardwoods.

Might be different over there???

summer, just water. Winter- have used water with windshield washer fluid but diluted and never leave any in tank at end of cutting for the day, BUT I think I will not use any this winter on hardwood and will see if I need any for softwood just to keep the blade clean. Trial and error.
logging small time for years but just learning how, with a Forest stewardship plan, 2 compact Ford 4x4 tractors, 3point log arch, 8000# class excavator, lifts 2500# and sets logs on mill precisely where needed,  Peterson ATS upgraded to WPF mill, sugar maple/maple syrup a hobby gone amuck.
