It's not cherry, but it's my first board on a new mill
« on: October 02, 2005, 08:10:35 am »
I've been reading you guys since I found the Forum doing my research for an economical mill for the 87 acre farm here in Ohio that I've been living on for the last 47 years. I have 5 acres of woods, a big bank barn and have been a craftsman and wood butcher all my life- but I didn't have a mill.

Safe , sensible and the right size for my needs, this is a good starter mill and I'm looking forward to the learning curve.I'm not a total rook tho, I took down a walnut log 18 years ago ,  had the Amish cut it  on a nasty circle rig, air dried in my barn and it's been a 12 foot long , arched trestle dining table in our house that can seat 18 for the last 4 years.  It's provenance is burnt on the underneath side and it's dedicated to the "old guy" who had challenged me to make it.  Some folks get a road or bridge named after them,  I like to think  he'd have been proud to have his name on the table.

So, mind if I join the club?   I'm hoping to drive down to the Paul Bunyan show next week and maybe say hello to a few of you.

I've got to run now.  I'll look up how to attach the picture that I took of the first board on my new mill.  Somebody want to point me in the right direction? ;)

Thanks to all for the kind words.  I got on last night at home, got the download successfully, couldn't seem to find where I'd build my own folder, couldn't quite figure out what Admin mode was,  went to send out a reply and I'd timed out!

Now this morning, up here at the Ford Plant ( in my 32nd year) I punch into the Photo Gallery and it shows the Upload file tag that I wasn't seeing at home.  Why was that?  Is it cuz it's dial up at home?  Or is it cuz I tapped as I first came in?  Seems funny.

In regards to my "nasty circle rig" comment.... the brethren around here take some serious risks,  don't have a lot of guarding,  and we hear some horror stories over the years about young guys overall straps getting caught on logs  and them getting cut in half!   A lot of what goes on in their  community never gets out !  Old style , rickety mills made me leary of the whole sawmilling process until I became aware of the band saw sawmill.  I've got "both eyes, both ears,  and all twenty-one" as we say and I want to keep it that way.

In now way was I casting aspersions  at  a professionally operated mill like Jeff was at.

The Amish around here are the same way, no safety features or nothing and when something bad happens, it stays quiet in the community for a long time.

Lud, where are you from?  Westfield township?  Up here at the Ford plant?  I know you must work at Ford of Canada in Ontario.  Right? ???  Try checking out our membership map and plant a tree. 8)  Or you could humor a guy like me who is a bit slow on the uptake and put the name of your state in your profile.  Boy, oh boy Jim sure is a nosey cuss!!! :P :P ;D ;D

To the nosy cuss,  JimB:   No problemo.......My very first note said Ohio,  so it's USA Ford here south of Cleveland.  Where's Jerseyville, Ill.?   I've got kin in Danville so I get out to Illinois sometimes.

And yes I like grits.  My wife makes the best cheese grits.  They go with anything.   And I'm living proof she's a good cook!  One of the reasons I stayed manual when selecting the bandmill was so I'd get the exercise! ::)

DanG:  The mill is a Simplicity.  Guy out of New York builds them and they are real solid .  I was almost ready to build one as I weld, etc. and raised on the farm here ,  I'm  mechanically inclined but I wanted to get cutting and I didn't need to reinvent the wheel...plus I've got the cheap gene and this mill,  new,  is priced  very, very  reasonable.   (won't disrespect the Forum's sponsors but I saved a couple grand).

Gonna drive south now  and go back to the woods and retrieve a couple of medium size sticks .  Had some wind damage from a tornado a couple years ago that I've got off the ground that I'm itching to start slicing.

Then  I'll try to post a picture or two now that I've gained yet a little more direction from all y'all  smiley_sunfriendly forum folks.

Lud,

Jerseyville, IL?  Find St. Louis, MO on the map, look north of that and you will see Alton, IL, look northwest from Alton and you will see a nice little wide spot in the road called Jerseyville.  Sumthin like 35 miles from St. Louis to Jerseyville.   It ain't real big, but we gots us one of them Supa' Walmarts..............or is that Stupid?  Anyway........we gots one!
