Had a visitor today...Fla. Deadheader
« on: September 22, 2005, 07:48:17 pm »
Had a nice visit with Harold today. It was my first chance to meet a FF member. I enjoyed talking with him about his upcoming move to Central America, his "french-fry" powered truck, and cypress trees. My son enjoyed listening to his description of his river logging operation. Unfortunately, customers kept interrupting our "important" business, but we did get to break for lunch and speak uninterrupted for awhile.
Harold, I see you've posted since you left, so I guess you found your way home alright, and the trailer didn't break! :) You're welcome to come back anytime.

Hills? Are you referring to highway overpasses?

:D :D :D :D :D  Central Florida, west of Orlando actually has hills. Probably 400 feet or more above the flats.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ya know, I think he's right!
I remember seeing this one place just a ways SW of Orlando where they were digging a real deep hole and building houses in it.
Guess those folks would indeed have a hill to climb. ;)

Furby, you are good at research. Try to find the highest elevation near central Florida  ??? ???

That hole was real though, it was a valley or something and they were digging it out/making it wider or something.

Right around that 400' mark, 422' jumps to mind but would have to look up the exact number. ::)

What do you have to back it up Tom?
Not trying to pick a fight, just saying there are sites quoting the #'s I posted.
I do belive you are right, but I can't back it up any, can you?

Well Furby, if I had to take it to a court of law,
I couldn't prove it from the info I've found on the web, but:

there is a hiking site that lists Iron Mountain as 295
That would be what a topo shows.

Wikipedia says 298
The Bok Tower site says 298
The USGS topo map indicates 295+

My eyes fail me, but, I think the
X is marking the 295 elevation.
What is inside of that E. Line is
not flat so I suppose that the other
three feet is accounted for in the
rise inside of that line.

High point in Florida is 345'.  That's in Walton County in the Panhandle.  Bok tower is at the high point in the southern half.

High point on my place is 302', two feet short of the highest in Gadsden County.  It is pretty hilly where I live...they aren't that high, but some are fairly steep.  Sometime's our wimpy mini-van has to downshift to get to the top.

Thanks Tom, wasn't really sure what to belive.
DanG cleared up the 345'.

Now Harold, that would mean there is a 100' hole below sea level for a hurricane to fill, don't it? :D :D :D

Now y'all got my attention. What about the site where Citrus tower is?
Went to Bok tower as a lad of 7or 8 thought it was the most beautiful place I'de ever seen--been a lot of places since, ain't seen nothin to change my mind.I don't ever go to Flordia, what I don't go to Bok Tower. Sure would be a nice place to have ones ashes spread, just put 'em in a fertilizer spreader, and leter go.

Dail,
If you went to the citrus tower today, all you will see are roofs! Talk about a dramatic change. It used to be when you  drove down US27 you could choke on the orange blossom fragrence, then came the freezes in the 80's. Now, it's homes, shopping centers, and pavement. :'(
