We were logging today.
« on: September 11, 2005, 09:12:48 pm »
Tammy and I have been working on a project and we needed some more logs and the logger I was getting logs from has had a major break down so we have been out.  So, yesterday and today we took matters into our own hands and went out to Tammy's brothers place to get some red pine. We used Bobby's ford for a skidder. (He is NUTS)  Tammy was choker setter. As the family invalid, my job was to stay out of the way and run the winch on our trailer to load. I was also the safety inspector for this job. Pay no attention to skidding with chains. Here are a few pictures of how we spent the day. Its was hot. Low 90's here. Unreal for going into mid September.

Jeff,

That looks like a great situation for a Ford truck commercial.  You should have taken a video of the truck/skidder for a deal on a Ford commercial.  :P I know a guy that works his garden with his truck every year.  I really think he would be nuts if he plowed it with the truck also. ;D

The fender? I suppose it smells O.K., but the pine smelled a little better until we mixed it with the gas fumes to get all the pitch off of us when we got home.

I am looking forward to sawing more of the pine. We brought home a load yesterday. Sawed half with the saw still messed up. It was work. We sawed the other half this morning after we changed the carb. What a pleasure. We sawed and edged a couple 8ft and a 12, all in less then 20 minutes. We were spending at least that on one small log previously.

Furby, these logs are solid and HEAVY. Just before dark I went out and took a couple sample measurements. About 10-12 growth rings per inch. No rot whatsoever. THe fenders came welded on the trailer.

Yes I'm sure they did come welded on, but after they break off, make some mods! ;)

10-12 rings per inch is not bad at all! The ones I've cut up were mostly around a 1/4" per ring, give or take a bit.
One day I hope to get one on the mill and see how they cut! ::)

Think it would be more fun on your mill anyways.

Chet, it don't take many, first log I had put on my big trailer broke a side of the fender loose.  ;D

I think Jeff has been broken in well! :D

Something like this really does work and you can get two layers of the size logs you have.
Real easy to unload too!

I plan to rebuild and use cants with a piece knocked out for the ramps and a couple lags through the deck.

We are building a shed/poolhouse/guesthouse/doghouse.   Its going to be a storage shed for the winter until we can get our barn/garage built hopefully this next year. Then its going to be a nice little just out the back door get away.

This is how it stands right now, as we ran out of materials for framing until we got these logs this weekend. The beam sticking out is framing for the cantelevered roof where there will be a loft.

Not trying to tell the boss what to do or nothing, but your your design some recievers for some fender brackets to set in and then you have bolts to anchor them in tight.

Then, whe you are loading logs remove the fender from the bracket recievers.

for easy loading over the tires, install some secondary brackes of 2" tubing that is 1/3" wall, use these brackets for a loading framework somewhat like a beavertale on the end of a equipment trailer.  You could even install a roller or two to ease the loading over the tires.

Top of the telephone poles is over 10" off the deck.

Rec room looks good! ;)
They just sold one about that size yesterday, didn't catch what it went for but they built it on runners to be moveable.

Furby, this one is 12 by 16 with the loft it takes up 16 by 16. Tammy plans a porch under the loft.  To big for going down the road, but we built this heavy to be moved around the property as we need to.

Thought about it as we need one up at the lake, but decided I'll build one........someday. ::)
Actually wanted to make it log cabin style.

Are you going to match the house siding?

Its a 1700 lb.  I got it a tractor supply. Here is a link

Seemed to have plenty of power. Even after winching on 9 logs the battery showed no signs of weakness.

Don, I would sure think so. Chet has a winch that I think is a tad smaller then mine and he manages to load some pretty big red oak with it.  I bet the one I saw on one of his loads was 30inch plus.  His fenders look good too. :)

Well I do load logs like Jeff had by hand.
A chain and a strap, down and around and my body weight off the fender and it's done!

Have also done end for end (lift one end on and then try to lift the other) and I REALLY don't like that!!!

Were the logs all that sappy Jeff  ???  I like cutting red pine...white pine is one of my favorites, but it has a little more sap than the red from what I've milled.  Blue spruce in the other hand....  :-\

Don't tell me I need to drive up there and show you! ::)
I can see it being a problem with your shoulder though, so I'm not suggesting you try it! ;)

OK.... got me a new winch ..  2000lb ATV winch for $50.   Well I will have it when I go get it... even comes with the correct mount for my ATV... just lucky on that part.

How do you have your winch mounted.  Looks like its mounted on the tongue and maybe a block on the other side of the fender you're smash'n.  Is it solid mounted or on some type of swivel?

I'll wander out and take a photo.  I have opne mount but plan on multiple mounts around the trailer.  I only had materials and time to get the first one done. I am creating a "Module" system whenr my winch, or ramps, or fender supports, or gates, or rails, will all drop in.  The front pocket or socket, is the first step.   I was using a pulley, hooked to a chain that was hooked to either side of the opposite fender, so I could winch sideways.  In the future, I'll just drop the winch in the side socket to have a straight on go.

I'll go get a photo.

O.K., for ney sayers of our photo system, I dont know what the elapsed time here is yet, but I found my keys, drove out to the trailer, got the winch out of the truck tool box, took a few photos, then walked back up to the house, plugged the camera in, optimized the phots, uploaded them, and here they are. ;)

You can change winch direction by simply pulling it up and dropping in in facing another way.

you should probably get a plate mounted so that the bolts are 90 degrees to the line of pull on the winch.  You are relying entirely on the tensile strength of the bolt to hold the winch on there, rather than shear.  at a minimum make sure you have grade 8 bolts in there.

just a suggestion, but most winch instructions say to not do it that way :)

Yep. I have the materials planed out for the real winch mount that drops in. This was just to get going so I could go get those logs. All I had to do was drill two holes. I dont have a welder or a torch.

Maybe I am missing something (possible for sure) but the way the winch is designed, how can one avoid stressing the two bolts in tension?  A picture or drawing would help.

basically, it should have a plate welded, or bolted with "big" bolts, to the verticle post. this plate should be horizontal, then the bolts will be in shear instead of in tension.

Remember, we are working with a wimpy winch here. Not a big high torque model.  If I have any problems shearing bolts, I'll have it welded right to the mount.

yeah, definately true, just don't stand in line with the cable.

a 5/16 grade 8 bolt should hold everything you can throw at it with that winch, provided you don't use the winch as a hook point when using snatch blocks.  the breaking point in tension of a 5/16 grade 8 bolt is around 7800lbs (provided I calculated it properly), a grade 5 is 6200lbs and a grade 2 is 3800 lbs per bolt.

Thanks for the pic's Jeff.... the modular idea is a good one.  could put the winch in any stake pocket and maybe another system to drop in the pockets for the blocks to connect to.   Grade 8 bolts is a good idea too....

Going logging again this morning. I need some 16 footers, and some more 8s for studs. I have 3 60ft+  red pine skidded out where I can get the trailer beside them.  I'll try our using some wood blocks under my skids this morning and see if it spares the fender anymore grief.  I did knock a side marker light off from it yesterday unloading logs.  smiley_smug01

Jeff, it will only take one unplanned attempt to stop before you re-prioritize that controller and trailer brakes.

If someone jumps out in front of you and then makes a turn you won't be able to stop in time.

Make that controller #1 priority. OK ??????

Boss, by the looks of it in the pics that there Chebby of yours is pretty new, if it has the factory trailer tow package on it installing the brake controller is about as hard as changing a light bulb.

It will be pre-wired to a socket under the dashboard, and they will should have given you a pigtail with the truck, if not stop at the parts counter, it's only a couple bucks.

You connect 3'ish wires from the controller to the pigtail, plug it in and mount the controller under the dash somewhere within easy reach.

Get'r'dunnnnnnn !!!!!

I just got a new trailer...  brakes on both axels...

My factory installed towing setup went dead... I wired in the controler and connector the old fashion way...   you know.. the way we used to do it before plug and play.

I towed it home empty without brakes, but I wouldn't consider a load of any kind.... seen to many of those "tail wag'n the dog" situations.  Get that sucker wired in....

Can't tell you how many times I've seen a mazda truck pulling a 35 foot Center Console with no brakes....  "geez, you bought the boat and couldn't afford a real truck to pull it with"   In FL, in order to take the boat to the ocean you usually have to go over a bridge...  the proud new owner must have forgot that bridges go downhill and they would have to stop the boat that is more than double the weight of the minitruck.  Seeing it stuck on the ramp was fun too.... not enough power to pull the boat out of the water. :D :D

I never actually got to see that as it happened.....  I've seen the end result.

The funniest thing is when the owner wants a police report or "accident" report.

"nope sorry sir/maam.... thats not an accident"  under the breath you say " that's stupidity"

Who should I call??  " Tow truck with a diver and your insurance company"  "Make sure you tell them you are going to be HEAVILY fined for spilling fuel into the estuary"

I didn't see this one, but was working when it happened.

27 foot boat, jeep wrangler, deep water ramp on the inlet, heavy outgoing tide.....  can you picture what happens??

Boat to heavy and pulls jeep into the water...  boat has enough flotation to float the jeep and trailer.....  fast tide takes boat out the inlet...  seatow and Coast guard have a feild day with that one.  Boat eventually took enough water over the bow and went down, but it was off shore a ways.
That happened on the east side of the Ft. Pierce south bridge off S A1A...  Harold you probably know the place.

My trailor quick connect keeps corroding, so I quit replacing it. I only haul stove wood from the wood pile out front to the basement window behind the house.

Ok, now here's a little inspiration to hook up them brakes. ;D ;D

Trailor Brake Control Box. The strength of the breaks is adjusted by a knob on the right. Heavier the load the stronger the brakes. Also, the control box will apply heavier brakes on hills automatically when you press the brake pedal. The brakes can be turned on manually by a slider switch on the front of the control box, pull it to the left to apply brakes. The light changes shades of red depending on the strength you set the control box. The stronger the brakes the redder it gets. When the brakes are hooked and makes connection the light turns green when idol.

Trailor brakes wiring coupler. They told me at the Dodge dealership to buy a factory made coupler that pushes into this slot (blue) would cost me $350 bucks. What a bunch of horse pucky. I made mine for less than a $1 :D :D. All I did was put sleeves on the ends of the four wires that go into it and slid each individual wire onto the female coupler under the dash. There is a 5th wire that goes back to the rear for the trailor brake wire, it makes connection with the brake wire coming from the trailor coupler. This wire is splised off the trailor brake control box.

Wire from the trailor break control box run under the dash, out through the driver's side door and under the cab and along the frame to the rear. It connects to the coupler that hooks up yer lights and such from the truck. I had to replace the small square plug with a round one to incorporate the trailor brake wire. (The picture here shows the wire coming from under the dash out through a hole from the cab into the hinge area of the pickup.

Pre-commercial thinning pays off. :)

Greetings all,

Go to http://www.etrailer.com you can purchase all the stuff you need including harness adapters and anything you could need to get your controller installed properly. They also have install instructions for specific vehicles. Their prices are very good and the service is excellent.

I have a dump trailer that I use for delivering firewood and also for hauling small amounts of logs (when I don't have enough to warrant a log truck) and I installed a controller in my Ford. It was very simple.

Hope that helps, good luck!

Jeff, I might be wrong, but I believe in NYS if the trailer has breaks (even if you added them) you are required by law to have them operational, which means GET THAT CONTROLLER INSTALLED. Michigan might be the same.
I have driven many trailer combinations and when the going gets tough (like a kid runs out in front of you) the brakes had better work NOW! I don't mean to be bossey, boss, but we need you!
logging small time for years but just learning how, with a Forest stewardship plan, 2 compact Ford 4x4 tractors, 3point log arch, 8000# class excavator, lifts 2500# and sets logs on mill precisely where needed,  Peterson ATS upgraded to WPF mill, sugar maple/maple syrup a hobby gone amuck.
