Not a home made solution but....

The local Biodiesel plant is providing a blend of ethanol and biodiesel to supplement the diesel used by the city of Fredericton. They are using just small amounts (mililitres) of the additives and reduce emissions by 65 % and increase mileage by 20 %. It's made from local grown grains.

Pre-commercial thinning pays off. :)

I am in Angatuba , São Paulo, Brazil to develop clean fuels. We discover from populars knowledges an alcoholic solution of riccinus communis leaves. This solution is like aeromodels motors fuel. We was tested it and when added to ethanol it cleans carbon deposits into cylinders. It acts like detergent. Combustion is better giving more force to straight ethanol fuel used commonly here in cars.

the original question was about how to produce ethanol at home.  I have 250 acres of trees which I would like to use to produce  electric power.  Is there a practical way of doing so?  The Sterling engine should work, but I can´t find one for sale.  Any suggestions?

Ask Wood Mizer.  They had one in 2000  or 2002 and were using it in a testing program.  They may still have it, but might be able to tell you where they got it too.

I just reread this whole thread from start to finish.  It is worth reading. :)

Making  ethanol is no big deal the problem is you can't use it in a engine that's not made to burn it ethanol is 100% alcohol so it burn's much hotter than gas this will kill yor engine moste newer engine's can run on a mix of 10% and know one make's a engine that run's on 100% e-85 is 85% ethanol but you need a engine and fuel pump desined to burn it.Alcohol is a drying agent it drie's out and cralke's fuel lines and the seal's in your fuel pump. On top of that there is atleast a 10% drop in fuel econmey engin's that are made to use it have sensor's in the fuel line's that let the engine know what the mix of gas and ethanol is and raise and lower the fuel pump presure depending on mix in GM's V8 truck engine's gas is around 55psi. ethanol drop's to around 36psi the reason for this is the hotter burnig fuel so if you don't have the wright setup DON'T DO IT
