I heard of a fellow that paid 200.00 for a 4" x 14" x 8' to be used as a fireplace mantle. So, the price for that beam actually sounds reasonable.
First of all, you try and make sure the timber is free of heart.
If you have the time and resources, I think one good way to partially solve the drying/shrinkage problem is to cut timbers oversize and stack them for a couple years or more. Then recut to size.
