woodmaster planner moulder
« on: July 23, 2005, 10:01:09 am »
Has anyone out there used this type of machine. I have the 12" model. I have changed the rubber feed rollers and now the 2nd set is wore out. Thinking of getting the steel feed roller . Very pricey. Has anyone changed to the steel rollers and if so what were your thoughts on them.

If you are going to use it just for planing, you should have a machine with bed rolls and metal feed rolls, it should also have a chip breaker.

I don't thing that you will have very good results changing to metal feed rolls on your machine, the rubber rolls have more gripping power. It takes a lot of down pressure on the metal feed rolls to make them work, to compensate for the increase friction, there is metal bed rolls under the feed rolls.

I'm wondering why they're wearing out. Do they slip a lot? I have a RBI planer with a thick piece of hard plastic on the bed and the boards hardly ever slip. Without the plactic in it the boards slip like crazy.    Steve

I have a woodmaster 718, and I really havent had any problem with the rollers, are they adjusted to the proper specifications, and the bed makes a world of difference also. Make sure the bed very clean, a good grade of paste wax works wonders. When I purchased my 718 , I also purchased the poly bed, and have ran plenty of lumber thru the planer.

I have had my 18" WoodMaster for some time and have had no trouble
with the feed rollers. There are two types of feed rollers for there planers.
One is a soft gray typw and a hard black one. What type do you have
Quebernewf? Try the black ones if you are doing rough lumber as they
will hold up better. I have the gang saw attchment but have yet to use
it. I have to git in and make a specal board for them so i can use it for
a stright line rip saw.

  Don R,
The 718 has been one of my best tools, next to my mill... :)of course. I wish woodmaster made a table saw for I would own one. The one I have has the molding head, drum sander, gang saw, planer head. I have used all of the attachments. The gang saw works great for making up blanks to run thru the molder, it cuts very true and really doesnt take long to set up, After I plane my lumber for a project, and then cut it out on the table saw, I finish it up with the drum sander, cuts down on the finish project. I know I sound like a salesman for woodmaster, but I think its worth the money, the only draw back is it may be a little slow compared to some of the more costly models out there.
