kiln over heating.
« on: July 05, 2005, 11:00:10 pm »
Anyone having problems with their kiln getting too hot? My Nyle is getting up to 119 F so I cracked the door open to act as a vent. I don't have a manual (other then door) or auto typ over heat vent. I was told I wouldn't need one in a DH unit.
Is this a big problem or is creeping temperatures up to the mid 120's OK?

My kiln chamber is well insulated with 4" of spray on foam insulation plus another inch of styrofoam.

When we put a control sysetm on a Nyle or other DH kiln, the temperature controller opens the vents to prevent overheating. Opening the door has roughly the same affect but you could disturb airflow and the humudity balance if you opened too far.

Yeah I would like to hook up an automatic vent. Is there relay contacts off the back of the controller that Nyle uses? Do you know where I can get a programming manual for the controller? Nyle manual says nothing about it.
If this controller is like some that I work with I could program it so that when the differential between the setpoint and process variable is above a certain amount then contacts would open or close to open the damper.

I don't think that Nyle has "A" controller. We have tossed some complicated stuff that was built by third parties. They were and still may be using the Partlow 7000 that, IMO, should have been shelved 10 years ago. But the 7000 is, at least, programmable. What does your controller look like?

With our single loop controllers, we program a deviation alarm in the temperature controller to open the vents and prevent overheating.

All Nyle systems are supplied with some sort of vent system ranging from manual to automatic so I don't understand who would have told you that you don't need any vents. There are several control systems and if you call Nyle, we will give you information on what you have. It sounds as though you have bought a used unit and didn;t get the whole package.

I think he was saying that he didn't have a vent that opened with excessive heat.

It is a used unit and didn't come with the manual vents. I knew this when I bought it. I'm trying to figure out know how to incorperate an auto type vent with the controller. I could also just hook in a seperate temperature switch that would controll a dampner but it would be nice to just use what is there already.

My Ebac overheats all summer.  To vent it I put in flap type clothes dryer vents in each end.  Plumbed in an old dust collector with 4" pipe.  My controller is this gadget.

When the dust collector comes on it takes about 2 minutes to bring the temperature down 3 degrees.  Besides venting excess heat I have found I can increase drying speed.  Got me to thinking about controlling the dust collector with a humidistat.
