A waste of money
« on: June 30, 2005, 09:17:23 am »
A new company is being organized to take the load of the vac kiln business off my back. I am having more time for R&D and more time to spend on processing thousands of boardfeet of lumber from test runs.

A couple of Saturdays ago, I went to Grizzly's scratch & dent sale to see what kind of equipment I could pick up. I got a little, 3HP planer. Now I'm piling up the dust and shavings.

No. The planer was not the waste of money. Here's the waste of money.

On Tuesday, my wife spends $20 on having the lemon beagle (Rosebud) shined up at a groomer. On Tuesday night, she gets sprayed by a skunk. On Wednesday, she spent the day laying on the dust pile.

For you PETA people: I moved Rosie to the shade in the yard, gave her fresh water and food before I started the planer and dust collection. She wandered back while everything was running. If it hadn't been so hot, I might have kept running until she was buried.

I love to see dogs find the sawdust pile.  Folks talk about us sawing people having an addiction.  They just haven't seen a dog that is bothered by fleas or an unwanted smell find a sawmill that is cutting cedar.   A dog will follow the output chute of a portable bandmill to get covered in the sawdust.   I think they like oak and blackgum for the same reasons that they like rolling in a cow pie.  :D

That's a great pic  :D  My dog just loves lying down in the sawdust pile.  Usually she waits until I'm done (cuz I typically have her tied up when I'm sawing), but last weekend she was in the pile while I was cutting some spruce.  Didn't seem to care too much for the shower.

Maya is lucky if she gets a bath bi-monthly.  Dead snakes are her favorite to roll in  :P

Den, what did you use to get the skunk smell out?  Maya was sprayed two days in a row the other week  >:(  Luckily they were babies, so it didn't linger after some homebrew shampoo.  I got a bottle of Skunk Off for any future incidents.  I also whacked five baby skunks  ;)

I don't know why but tomato juice gets rid of skunk smell.

I guess tomato juice works but after Rosie got sprayed, the skunk was between us and the house. We 'dashed' inside before I realized that she was hit. I sat down to drink a beer trying to ignore the stink while I figured out what to do about the stink that followed us in. Rosie went looking for my wife who was upstairs in bed. To make a long story short, she spread the stink through out the house. Tomato juice just wasn't what we needed.

A Google search came up with a mixture of peroxide, baking soda and, when applied to a dog, a spoonful of dog shampoo. That actually works if you can find every trace.

Yes, she is a lemon as a beagle. Rabbits thumb their noses.  :D

Dogs may love the sawdust pile, but I don't have a dog.  I have a cat.  And what do cats typically do with piles of sawdust?   :( :o

Needless to say, the door to the shop stays closed and latched at all times, because I'm sick of finding "gifts" in the sawdust pile and slightly damp and smelly sawdust.

"Polecat Juice" is actually an oil. I used to boil my traps and the oil would float off, IF ya ran water over the top of the container. NEVER lift anything out of the water, it will simply "Re-coat" whatever you are cleaning.

Den

What are you refering to when you say a new company is being formed? Are you getting out or just reorganizing.

So far I have kept our dog away from the skunks. The other night though she saw 4 different skunks on a walk and would have love to go and play, but being the obedient black lab she is she came when I called and we avoided a nasty incident.

bb&m,

Just organizing a new company. I can't handle the calls. I don't have time to spend on shipping kilns to Timbuktu. I'm tired of trying to manage production and installation.  New contacts will be at our website soon (if they aren't there yet).

Labs are really good dogs. But they are a threat when they are hot and shake near you. I need a smiley with a splat!

Only problem with the planer is that after work when I head downt to the creek for a swim all I hear is 'mmrmrrrrrrwwwaaarrrhh' floating on the breeze from the shop till like 8pm...but he is tearing through the pile in a hurry...and man, finished wood looks a WHOLE lot better than rough sawn:  I never realized I liked the way White Oak looked until I saw it planed!

Den, there was a thread not too long ago about skunks, and several members mentioned the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap homebrew, which is what I used.  I don't know how well it would've worked if she got hit by an adult skunk, but it did the trick.

Engineer, when I was little the neighborhood cats used to use our sandbox  >:(

hey Mike,

Rosie's hair has more color than mine. Don't knock my dogg.  ;)

The Black 'n Tan is still on tap. Comin' up Pine Creek this summer?

I should do this by private email but... did Bill at MIS survive his heart surgery? He was supposed to start supplying my customers in this area.

I bought a mbf of white oak from a tie mill a couple weeks ago. I've been running it through the planer. I think I'll panel my office with it. Wait 'til you see it. GaS (Garrett Socling) is getting red oak in his office. Both will get 'details' in red beech, wenge, holly and everything else I can nail up. Wish I had a bigger office!  :D

Den.
Me knock a dog? NEVER! I love dogs. What was it we use to say back during those old 70 hour weeks running the RF kilns?
"Go home and kiss the dog and kick the wife"? ;D
I need to change my user name to "old2dogg". I only have 2 dogs left. I have a stupid cat that thinks its a dog but that doesnt count.
I would love to hit Slate Run again sometime soon. Time doesnt allow right now. Big changes in my life. If I do make it down your way Im bringing my own beer! Okay. I will have 1 black and tan just to make you happy. Im bringing my test kit along just to see whats in it. I still say that one could run a chain saw with that stuff!
Dont have a clue as to who Bill or MIS is??
And its good to see that you love your son. You are giving him the Red Oak for his office after all! :D
