Fire Scar
« on: July 07, 2002, 04:50:18 pm »

This is a Fire Scarred Sugar Pine.  You can sometimes  "read" fire scars and get an idea of fire frequency in the area.  This is best done by looking at the stump.  This tree in particular probably received the most damage in the 1850's  This area was denuded by the miners looking for gold.  This is one that survived.

We sawed some red pine a few ago that had healed over charcoal in them.  The trees were second growth around 100 years old and were scarred in their twenties.  Didn't seem to hurt them.  The outsides showed no seams or other signs of injury.  It wasn't until sawing that we found the scars.
