MS 260 Tune up help
« on: April 04, 2005, 08:56:30 am »
good morning everyone :)

I've had my MS260 over a year now and put about 50 -75 tanks of fuel through it.  It has recently started idling high after getting warmed up.  The chain runs fairly quickly when this happens.

I turned down the idle but then it won't idle cold.

I cleaned the exhaust screen, air filter, cooling fins etc with no effect.

It runs perfectly when cold and warm but after the first felling cut of the day it high idles there on.

I have noticed when it is shaken a bit moving from sideways to upright to start limbing it will slow the idle down for a second or two then pick right up again.

I tinkered with the low idle screw but it has limiters on it and figured I shouldn't have to turn it much anyways.

Another thing is my saw I think runs rich.  Everywhere around the exhaust is stained black with soot.  It puts out quite a bit of smoke at full throttle even when cutting.

I suspect the dealer set it a bit rich to avoid servicing a burned up saw.

Off the top of my head, it sounds like it may be an airleak.  If it's only when it's warm, it sounds like something is opening up and letting air in, giving you a higher rpm, lean condition.  It's a new saw you said?  Hopefully not leaking seals, but rather something simple like an impulse line or cylinder/case seal.  Have you adjusted the carb at all since you've bought it?  It will surely need to be adjusted after it gets broken in, and worked a little, which by 50 tanks it certainly is.  If it's idling fast, and you can't slow it down enough with the LA (idle) screw, it sounds like a generally lean condition, and not a problem with your idle screw.  Cleaning the exhaust and air filter would make it run leaner as you let more air through it.  You can pull those limiter caps pretty easily.  There's a tang on them that will line up with the groove in the carb itself.  You can do it with a sheetmetal screw, but that can be a hassle, and a good way to strip it out if you're new to the procedure.  You can go to your Stihl dealership and ask for a limiter cap tool.  He knows what it is.  P/N 5910 890 4500.  He can sell you one for like $6. It's LH threaded stud that threads into the caps and allows you to pull them out without destroying them.  The manual says you can't reuse them, but you can if you're careful with them.   When it's hot, and you have the idle problem, how does it run in the cut, under load?   What mix ratio are you running?  Soot and smoke sounds like too much oil, not necessarily too much fuel.

The saw should be tuned with the engine warm with a clean filter.
If it was tuned cold, that may be a problem.

Thanks fellows, yes the LA works to set the idle speed.  It used to idle the same cold as warm, if anyhting a bit fast when cold but then smoothing out when warm.  So now if I set the idle hot it will hardly run when I set the saw down a few minutes to winch a tree out.

I looked over the lines and the only thing I noticed is the little tube haircut rig on the top of the fuel tank (vent or something?) has some saw dust in it.

I mix my oil at 50:1, Stihl brand oil.  I always err slightly too rich at maybe 45:1 if I can't get a good read on the bottle.   My neighbour has a Husqy 345 and we cut together and his runs clean on my fuel bottle.

Re how it acts in the cut etc, it is slow accerelating for limbing and slow to slow down, both compared to when it was new and compared to neighbours husqy.  Every so often cutting it will feel about 20% more powerful but I can't figure if it is my sharpening improved or wha. :D

Also it only has a 16" bar but I can bog it easily in a cut if I get onto the felling spikes at all even though the rakers are only filed with the stihl filing plate.

I can tell when it is nearly out of fuel as it will start cutting like a monster for a few seconds before I realize I'm about out of fuel.

I'll take another look over but it may be time for a trip to a tach and experienced fellow.  I've not used enough saws to know what is right or wrong for power and speed feel/sound.

Verdict, needed carb adjustment and tank vent was clogged.   Replaced fuel pickup while it was in the shop.

Should run much better now. 8)
