Do we still have a photo gallery or was that not transferrable????

Not complaining just wondering.

Everything runs and looks great even for dial-up. 8) 8) 8)

Many of those features are separate-from -the-forum systems that Jeff manicured to make them fit the old forum.  He will be working with them along and along to try to make them fit the new one.  Hopefully he will be successful with most of them, it'll just take some time.  Gotta go one step at a time. :)

Thanks Tom

I was just wondering of it was one of those features that would be gone-gone or if it would take some time to get back.

But everything looks great. 8)

It's coming along nicely.  The thumbnails loaded lightning fast but when I clicked on a pic it did not enlarge.  I did get the description and date of posting.  Keep up the good work.  Are you fuelin' yourself with grits?  :D

Just a warning.. if you are running an old Win98 PC like my bench / test pc, dont click on that link  :D

OK.. it's probably too late, you did already eh??

Jeff, it's looking good ( apart from almost crashing my poor little pc  ;) ) ,hopefully you can break it down into sections that are easier to load / browse??

Cheers

Tom wrote up some good stuff on how to do pictures in the old house.  Maybe ya could come up with some good guide lines here in the new house. :)

Couple of ideas off the top of my head....don’t know if they are workable or not.

  • Link in the picture description back to the thread?
  • Users handle on the picture?
  • Description in the link thing under the picture?
  • Some way to search the pictures?

I know that I could never find one of the pictures I put on 6 months ago.  You guys write the rules and I’ll do what ya want.

Depends on what ones you click on. We have preached not to put spaces or special symbles in picutre file names, but some folks insist on it. When you come across one that has those, they may not work. If you clicked one that had a problem like that you get an x. Other then that, you will see the actual image in the other frame.

Ahhh... what will work now is if you find a photo in the gallery, type it's file name into the search box, and it will find the thread ( or threads) that relate to it.  :)

Maybe thats something you could build into the picture gallery Jeff?

Ohhh the joy of having a decent search function  :)

I think what I really need to do, and it will take some time, is create new archive gallerys from our old. Sort all the photos by type I guess. I can look at photo thumbnails on my machine and bulk sort them into directories according to the content. Of course if someone else would like to do that I will gladly give you the download of the entire zip file. ;D

I am decreasing the size of the thumbnails. In order to that, I have to delte the thousand that were created when the script first run for that gallery. :D

They only need to be big enough to identify what is in them.

Ummmm... sounds like a job for a Looong winter night  ( or several ) :o

I was thinking of A-D, E-H etc sections. That would at least break it down into managable chunks and be much easier to do?

I see the smaller thumbs, but it does make it hard to figure out what is going on in some pictures ( insert magnifying glass smiley here )

We could do the alphabetical thing, but the way I figure it, thats useless for finding anything. Have you looked at the file names of most photos? :D  Probably the biggest share of them are simply camera assigned names.

If we had a "lumber gallery". "mill photos" "Logging photos"  "Family Photos" " Animal photos" "Scenary"

or something like that, wouldnt it be easier to perhaps track down an old photo?

That sounds great Boss,but...............geez that's a LOT of work. I am sure you will come up with something...but take a day or two to rest and think about it.  Are you on a grits high or sumptin? Is it time for an intervention from your computer? ;D

It would be easier, even yet, if the person who put the picture on the gallery used his initials or userid on the front ot the file name and then made the file name mean something.

Jeff, how would that work for new pics added? Would you have to go back every once in a while and sort them?
I'm thinking that different catagories would be nice, but how would the new ones get there. Also would they still be A-Z in each catagory?

here is the link again for the daring, and those with high band width.  You can always hit your stop button and not load all of the thumb nails

I gave it a try!
Most did not load so it only took 7 minutes.

Yep, think you are right on about the catagories!
LOVE having the thumbnails though!

There are a little under 6000 pics right?

That works now, if you are patient  ;)

My home PC has a bit more memory and didn't die anywhere near as badly  :D

The reason I suggested alphabetical is cos it would be quick and easy way of dividing it into managable chunks that could at least be browsed.  Another option might be by month? , sorting by date.

Once you find an interesting picture the search works good to find the thread it relates to :)

Sorting into categories would be the ultimate, but thats a lot of work.. and some of the pictures just defy categories  ??? It's fun just to look thru the random collection and search out anything of interest.  :)

How about into months like January through April and so on  ??? Seems to me the files wouldn't be so large to load  :-\

I really dont have any way of knowing what photos were from what month. THe file date on the server changes to when thefile was last accessed from what I can see, not when it was created.

Jeff,
I guess what I should of asked was as the new pics are uploaded to the FF. That's the way it was done before and it seemed to work good.

Maybe what ian suggested, alphabetically might be the way to keep the file sizes down.  Cause when I went to look it was gonna take some time to  download all to get down to the T's and beyond, and I got DSL :o

I wish I had more than two cents to donate  ;D

THis may be the way we do it in the future. You have to select what gallery a photo goes into.

I have been rethinking the old gallery, and to tell you the truth, there aint much I can do about them. If I move them to seperate galleries, the links throughout the forum will break.  All I can do to make a browsable gallery for the old photos, it close them off, then put duplicates in assorted galleries.

ok..I got 2 pennies so here they are  ;D How about putting all previous pics in the old forum archives folder.....to save work and mental torture.....then let each forum category have a pic section....i.e. General board pics....Sawmill pics.....Forestry and logging.....Drying...Timberframe....... of course some topics wouldn't need pics so you could limit the amount of pic topics...........yes that burning smeel is coming from my brain,so I gotta quit thinking for now ::)
