Planting Time!
« on: April 20, 2002, 07:24:31 am »
Well, I planted 45 little Tree of Hopes this morning. No, they are not propagated from the real thing, as the Tree of Hope did not produce cones this last year. Same species though!

White Spruce Seedling

Because of the development between me and U.S. 27, most of the trees have been removed. I planted these trees down and around the end of my property in hope that they will prove to be a noice barrier. Its amazing how much sound that even deciduous trees will block. You would have never known the highway was there till the property owners between me and it cleared all thier trees off.

I am already about deaf anyways from the mill, so this is a gift to the future, just as the mature trees I have now were a gift from the past.

A little fertilizer and some time and you wll have a wall of green, Jeff.

Yep, sound sure travels.  There is a race track 5 miles to the east that we listen to on Sat. night, and an airport 5 miles to the south that we listen to everyday when they rev one of those big engines up for takeoff.  Even the trees don't help but there has been a big difference since the 200 acres to the east of me was harvested.  It sounds like all these noises are right next door now.

I wonder if someone may have gotten viable seed from the "Tree of Hope"?  You had said once that cones had been picked up.  I wonder if anyone looked for seed?

We picked up cones from the supreme court tree in Sanford. I heard they were going to try to propagate some trees from cuttings from the big tree, but I have not heard if they were successful.

I don't have a nice enough suit to get one anyways.

These 45 trees are just as good, maybe even better because of how I came to get them. They were procured for me by my friend Ada, who I worked with on the TOH project. Since then, we have become great friends and continue to work together on other projects.

As I planted my trees this beautiful morning, I reflected on all the people that I met and worked with and the friends I made during the tree of hope project. Good way to spend a Saturday morning.

The best thing of it is, that not only are they bringing back memories from the past year. As you look out into your back yard these trees will bring back memories for years to come as well. The gift that keeps on giving. Ain't trees great

About to plant my 1,000 walnuts for the year for the Grands to benefit from, feels good to know they'll have a legacy and maybe remember the old coot after he's gone !
